Chaparral Vacation Package By: Calum Fletcher and Austin 9/22/2010 Hr.3

Animals Most common-roadrunners, scrub jays, jackrabbits, foxes, toads, snakes and gophers. Most animals in chaparrals have methods of protection against wildfires. Most scarce-red-legged frog and San Bruno elfin butterfly are endangered and rare species in the chaparral biome. Look out for poisonous animals like rattlesnakes and scorpions, as well as dangerous ones like the mountain lion and bear.

Animals 2 Some animals like quail can be used as a food source. Fox can be valuable for its hide. Most animals in chaparrals are adapted to hot weather and have methods of protection against the frequent fires. Because of the low water supply, many animals, like jackrabbits, eat their food again after its digested to get more of the food’s moisture out. So more water for you and more animals alive for food!

Plants The most common plants you will find in any chaparral are shrubs, woody plants, and oak trees. California’s chaparral is it’s most extensive plant community. Most plants in a chaparral biome are adapted to frequent wildfires, and have leaves that conserve moisture. The chaparral in South Africa has around 8,000 plants, nearly 6,000 of these can’t be seen anywhere else in the world! The beautiful Fairy Duster shrub is a pleasant light pink, a very good sight to see!

Useful plants The chaparral herb is one of the most useful plants in the world for its blood-cleansing and anti-tumor effects. There are trees in a chaparral that can be used for its source of wood. The history of the rare plant types in a chaparral are valuable to resemble the past.

Climate-COLD In the winter the Chaparral climate, also known as the Mediterranean climate, is mild and moist, but not rainy. The temperature is usually mild but it can get very hot or nearly freezing. The temperature range is between 30° and 100° F. A chaparral usually receives about 10-17 inches of rainfall each year.

Climate-HOT During the summer it is very hot and dry. Water sources are uncommon to find, the heat and sunlight has evaporated most of the water. Frequent fires are also a problem, so make sure to bring lots of sunscreen, fire equipment, water and a variety of clothes!

Geography The geography of the chaparral is mostly mountains and a lot of rocks. One can consider a chaparral as an intermediate zone between desert and grassland. Chaparrals can have flat plains, rocky hills, or mountain slopes.

Geography Frequent wildfires occur a lot in chaparrals, because of the hot dry weather, and sometimes lightning, leaving most of the landscape covered with fire-adapted shrubs. The chaparral biome is found in only a few places on earth–the West Coast of the United States, the west coast of South America, the Cape town area at the tip of South Africa, the western edge of Australia, and the coastal areas of the Mediterranean.

Fun and Interesting Facts A large amount of wild west movies were filmed in a chaparral. Because chaparral has a low canopy and grows on steep slopes, chaparral fires are hot, hot, hot; temperatures may exceed 1,200° F!

Travel The temperatures vary, so bring a few cold weather clothes and a lot of warm weather clothes. Frequent fires in the chaparral biome create a cause for fire safety equipment. Hiking is the main activity to do in chaparrals.
