Deviance Behavior that departs from societal or group norms. Deviance can vary from group to group and society to society.

What constitutes deviant behavior? Homosexuality? Prostitution? Drugs? Criminal activity? Christians? Bearded men? Girls who wear make-up? Smart-alec students?

Negative Deviance Involves behavior that underconforms to accepted norms. Either reject norms, misinterpret the norms, or are unaware of the norms.

Positive Deviance Involves behavior that overconforms to social expectations Extremes of perfection Idealize group norms.

Norm – Skinny is beautiful Negative Deviance – obesity Positive Deviance – Anorexia or bulimia

Deviant A person who breaks significant societal or group norms. Reactions to deviants are usually negative and involve attempts to change or control deviant behavior.

Social Control Ways to encourage conformity to society’s norms Drivers stop at red lights People don’t steal from their neighbors Students do what their teachers ask them to do.

Internal Social Control Fear of consequences and the belief of right and wrong, stop us from breaking social norms. Why wouldn’t you rob a bank? Even if you knew you wouldn’t get caught? You’d feel guilty? Even the robber in the movie had a conscience, he stole from someone rich, that got rich by doing something “bad”

External Social Control Not all people conform to social norms Social Sanctions – rewards or punishments that encourage conformity to social norms. Criticism, fines, and imprisonment are meant to stop socially unacceptable behavior.

Review for quiz 5 questions worth 25 points Will help raise your grade. I will give you the vocab word, you give me the definition.

Quiz 1. What is the difference between positive deviance and negative deviance? 2. What is deviance? 3. Give me an example of a deviant 4. What are social sanctions? 5. What is social control?
