1.  Do Now: LEVEL 0: Spend 5 minutes reviewing section 10.1 (look over the 3 questions, identifies, and definition at the top of 266); those of you that haven’t completed 10.1 do so now!  Today, I will be able to explain how Jefferson reduced the role of the federal government during his first term. I will also be able to explain the importance of the Marbury v. Madison ruling.  Turn in chapter 9 assignments (9.1, 9.3, 9.4 and poster)  Check your current grade, (if you don’t like your grade: turn in the assignments, study, and ask for help…not during current class time).

3.  People should have political power  Strong state government (KY and VA Resolution)  Emphasis on agrarian based economy  Strict interpretation of the Constitution.  Main foreign ally should be France  Opposed national bank (unconstitutional, 10 th Amendment).  Opposed protective tariffs (hurt southerners and farmers, artificially drove up the cost of goods).

7.  Federal courts had little Constitutional power.  Adams will appoint Sec. of State John Marshall (federalists), Supreme Court Chief Justice.  Supreme Court is a lifetime appointment, can be removed through impeachment. *11 federal judges have been impeached in 200+ years*  Marshall will rule that the Judiciary Act is unconstitutional, thus giving the court the power of “judicial review”  Marbury v Madison Marbury v Madison
