4 WHAT? What type of colony was Jamestown at first? -at first it was a business venture of the joint stock company (Virginia Company) * What did it later become? -a royal colony (Virginia)

6 WHEN? When was Jamestown settled? - April 1607 with 150 people -Winter 1607, 38 alive when John Smith takes control. “He that shall not work shall not eat When was the “starving time”? -Winter of 1609, 60 alive out of 600 that had arrived that spring

Why did the settlers go to Jamestown? -find GOLD, adventure, farm (headright system – 1618-you got 50 acres of land for each passage you paid for) Why did others support them? -hope for financial gain * Why didn’t the settlers get along with their neighbors the Powhatan? Settlers appetite for land was unending

10 WHY? Continued…… Why did Jamestown nearly fail? -Disease killed many -many settlers were more interested in finding gold than in hunting and farming -Powhatan killed livestock and settlers

12 Where? Where was Jamestown? on a peninsula along a broad coastal river of Virginia in which the colonist would call the James River after their King

14 HOW? How was Jamestown saved from failure? -John Smith took over and forced the colonists to WORK! -Tobacco “Brown Gold” provided the colonists with the money they needed to build a colony

15 Add to notes…….. Headright system: anyone who paid for their own passage or someone else’s passage to Virginia received 50 acres of land. Effect……..immigration to the new colony skyrocketed. Helped ensure the survival of Virginia

16 Add to notes………. First Slaves to Virginia: arrived on a Dutch merchant ship in 1619. Approximately 50 total. Records show they were treated as indentured servants and most received land and freedom years later. Treatment of slaves changed due to the importance of tobacco and a decrease in indentured servants.
