The first permanent English settlement in North America was founded at Jamestown, Virginia in 1607 English colonies in Virginia developed into the present states of the southern United States.

4 Colonization is a Business
King James: granted a permit charter to two joint stock companies: Virginia companies of (London & Plymouth) Virginia Company: lured financial support by telling investors they would receive a percentage of all the profit they would receive from: gold, silver, cash crops. The English monarch would receive 20% of all the profit from Virginia Company,

5 Disaster in Jamestown - CAUSES: (WHY DIDN’T THE COLONY WORK?)
1.) Settlers focused on finding gold and planting tobacco and not on SURVIVAL ! 2.) Settlers were not used to working hard (Many came from rich, noble families who did not know how to clear fields, plant crops, build shelter, etc.) 3.) Disease from infected river killed many. (dysentery) Hunger soon followed

6 Disaster in Jamestown Effects
1.) 38 out of 150 colonists remained alive by winter ) Jon Smith takes control of colony; colony begins to improve 3.) The Powhatan Tribe begins to help settlers 4.) Smith implements new law: NO WORK, NO FOOD

7 John Smith Does not Live Happily Ever After
Smith returns to England after he gets burned in a fire and Jamestown begins to crumble -SPRING 1609: Another 600 colonists arrive (women & children) -Powhatan Tribe and English settlers begin to quarrel. How did Powhatan Tribe sabotage Jamestown settlement?

10 CLASHES WITH NATIVE AMERICANS
More and more settlers and indentured servants come to Jamestown for freedom and prosperity. English settlers begin to push Powhatan and other Native American tribes off their lands. White settlers and Native Americans clash and violence ensues

11 ENGLISH PATTERN OF CONQUEST
Learned conquering technique from their conquest of Ireland. Use superior weapons and fighting techniques to conquer and drive away native peoples (total and complete conquest) English colonists were forbidden to intermarry with Native Americans English colonists were forbidden to create a mestizo population Settle land and develop plantation economy using indentured servants then slaves.

12 ECONOMIC DIFFERENCES SPLIT VIRGINIA
As the Jamestown colony grew, an influx of poor indentured servants migrated to the colony. Once their service ended, white and black former indentured servants traveled to the western to build their own homes and plantations. Two societies came about: Wealthy, land owning planter society located in the eastern part of the colony. Poor, black & white indentured servant class located in the western section of the colony.

13 NATHANIEL BACON’S REBELLION
Who was Nathaniel Bacon? Why were the poor, former, indentured servant class upset with the handling of Native Americans by the rich ruling class in Jamestown?

NATHANIEL BACON decided to take charge: (WHAT DOES HE DO) Governor William Berkely and the rich landowners call Bacon’s army illegal. (WHY)

BACON’S ARMY DECIDES TO MARCH INTO JAMESTOWN (WHAT HAPPENS?) Bacon’s army sets fire to the town. William Berkley flees Jamestown and requests that the King send troops to quell the violence. When Berkley returns with troops, Nathaniel Bacon had died of dysentery and the rebellion had ended. Berkley executed members of the rebellion. African slavery would increase and indentured servitude would eventually end.
