2 Entry Task- You are the Teacher!  Take out your vocab homework.  Using the other students trifold, complete the worksheet for every vocab word.  Present your vocab sheet, show your artwork and make sure your fellow students understand your word in your own words.

3 Jamestown  English Merchants asked King James for a charter for the area of Virginia.  Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in America.  Not prepared for colonial life  2/3 of the original colonists were dead.

5 John Smith  Took over the colony in 1608  Made the settlers work harder and build a fort.  Rewarded harder workers with food.  Made friends with the Powhatan tribe  Tribe brought colonists food and showed them how to plant corn.

6 Sickness in Jamestown  In 1609, the colony received 400 colonist  A year later there were only 60 left!  Disease and famine struck the colony  Winter was called “The starving time”

7 John Rolfe  Introduced a tobacco that Jamestown farmers could sell in England  Married Pocahontas  Took her back to England where she died three years later.  Video Video

10 Indentured Servants  Often swapped 50 acres (headright system) for passage to colonies  Gentry paid their way  Got land back when debt paid, usually 7 years  Often died & didn’t claim land  Lowest social class

11 Bacon’s Rebellion Crisis Over Land  Tenant farmers & indentured servants want to own land (couldn’t vote)  1670s- available land in Piedmont (foothills)  Gentry didn’t want people in Piedmont, would make Native Americans mad

12 Crisis Over Land  1675, war between N. Ams. and settler in Piedmont  Governor stopped the fighting

13 Nathaniel Bacon  Gentry with land near the piedmont  Attacked by N. Am.  Organized militia and attacked N. Am.

14 Nathaniel Bacon  Seized Jamestown  Charged governor with corruption

15 Nathaniel Bacon  Governor raised army  Bacon got sick and died  Rebellion ended

16 Slavery Increases in VA  After rebellion, VA expanded to get land for small farmers (scared of rebellion)  Plantation owners switch from indentured servants to slaves

17 Slavery Increases in VA  Why the switch?  -don’t have to free slaves  -cheap land in PA means fewer Indentured servants  -Royal African Company makes slaves plentiful

18 Slavery in the Colonies  Olaudah Equiano- wrote an account of the Middle passage  Middle Passage- transport of enslaved Africans to Americas  Originally, slaves were treated like indentured servants

19 Slavery in the Colonies  1683- Maryland says slaves don’t have the same rights as whites  1705- Virginia slave codes- regulated and defined slavery
