Adverbs with and without ‘-ly’: ‘carefully’, ‘fast’ 1.Na adverb adds to the meaning of a verb. Adverbs of manner tells us how something happens: How did John behave? – (He behaved) badly. 2.We form adverbs of manner by adding – ly to na adjective: slow/slowly. After a consonante, -y changes to –i: heavy/heavily. It was a slow train./The train went slowly. It was heavy rain./Itrained heavily. 3. To many of his classmates, Daniel seemed unusual/unusually and they laughed at him. This hurt Daniel deep/deepply, and he became very shy/shyly. As a teenager, things changed. Daniel discovered he had an incredible ability. He could solve difficult math problems almost instant/instantly. He also discovered another talent: he could learn to speak a language very quick/quickly. Today, he is fluente/fluently in twelve languages. As an adult, Daniel has overcome his shyness.
