7 th Grade Humanities World History Unit 1: Medieval Europe  The Fall & Legacy of the Roman Empire  Feudalism  Christianity in Europe  The Fall of Feudalism

Looking Back What did you predict would happen to the area where the Roman Empire was? Rome made a lasting impact in our society. – In what ways?

Now What? The fall of the Roman Empire in 476 C.E. marks the beginning of the Middle Ages and the system of Feudalism After Rome fell, life was dangerous and difficult in Western Europe -Imagine living in an abandon empire. How would you survive? How would you decide who was in charge? What would your life be like?

The Rise of Feudalism Challenges in survival and organization led to the rise of feudalism Feudalism: the economic and political system that developed in Europe in the Middle Ages

Feudalism Hierarchy

Fall of Rome and Rise of Power Europe had no central government – What happened? What would America be like without government? What are qualities of a powerful person? Charlemagne's Empire – Ruled for 40 years – Leader of the Franks What modern day country has a name similar to this? – Valued education and scholarship – Unified all Christian lands of Europe into a single empire – Christianity became a cornerstone to European culture

King Father of Europe

A Need For Order Charlemagne’s empire survived many barbaric attacks – What do you think the word barbaric means? Known for giving land and privileges to knights in exchange for the military service – First signs of feudalism He died in 814 and the empire quickly fell apart Factors: 1. Weak leaders 2. Invasions Notice any patterns?

The Vikings are Coming! Imagine a Viking attack, The people of the village are at early morning church services, when a alarm bell starts ringing. Vikings! Long, shallow wooden boots have brought the Vikings to shore. Now they leave their boats and run towards the town with swords and axes raised over their heads. People are running in all directions. Several villagers who try to resist are killed Others are seized by the Viking raiders and taken back the ships.

Clearly… People in Western Europe needed ways to defend themselves and their property, cue feudalism.

Feudalism: Establishing Order Feudal system provided people with protection and safety by establishing a stable social order Social system was made up of the following (in this order) 1. Monarchs/Kings 2. Nobles 3. Knights 4. Peasants/Serfs The government system’s foundation was made up of land ownership

Why is feudalism presented as a pyramid?

Monarch What do you think a monarch during feudal ages would do? Expected to keep order and provide protection for the rights of their vassals – Vassals: people who provided loyalty to the monarch in exchange for protection and land Divine Right of Kinds: the idea that God had given the right to rule

Nobles Also known as lords and ladies What do you think the responsibilities of nobles are? Lived in manors (fancy mansions) or castles Expected to manage and defend his land and the people who worked it Had power to fine and punish those who broke the law – Who does this remind you of in our modern day society?

Knights What do you think were the responsibilities of a knight? Expected to be soldiers of the medieval world Had to have some wealth  a full suit of armor and a horse was expensive! Males would begin training at a young age and if he was deserving in his 20s, would become go from being a squire (knight in training) to a knight

Peasants What do you think were the responsibilities of a peasant? Expected to support the entire feudal structure by working the land Freed up other members of society to prepare for war Free Peasants = rented land to farm and owed only their rent to the lord Unfree Peasants (serfs) = farmed the lord’s fields and could not leave. Received a small plot of land to farm.

World Revolves around Work

America’s Feudal System Do you believe America has a feudal system? Who would be the monarch? Who would be the nobles? Who would be the lords? Who would be the peasants?

Do you agree with this pyramid?
