1 Incident and Injury Free (IIF)
Randy Maddox

2 Why am I (Randy Maddox) a champion of IIF??
Personal Story… ENR Article… I was a project manager for Manson and on one particular project I obtained the dubious honor of running the project with the Largest IR we have ever recorded… At the same time this project a 1000ft remodel and expansion of an exiting wharf was obtaining profit margins we had Not anticipated or seen an previous similar projects…. Go Figure… Remember The Car-Harts!!!!! What I did know that I was uncomfortable towards the end of that project… Uncomfortable as Hell… I couldn’t sleep at night fearing my cell phone would ring again and I would be escorting another friend, coworker, craftsman, person… You Pick the title… to the hospital… I rode in the ambulence several times on that project.. We never killed anyone but Boy did we give death several chances…. So what really happened to me??? How did this experience move me to become a champion of IIF????

3 Engineering News Record
…He heard a line in a video being shown that jarred his thinking on injury prevention forever: ”Everybody deserves a future.” Engineering News Record August 7th, 2006 When I heard those words “Charlie” uttered on the screen… I suddenly realized that I had a Lot of control of that Future for the people working on my projects…. And it scared me to think of all the chances I had taken not only for myself but for all the guys and their families… My attitude towards safety was theirs… and the brutal reality of that I believe for the first time sunk in…. Therefore; I decided to listen and give this thing IIF a chance… I made a deal with myself…. Against my first instincts NOW… to listen, Learn and go out and try this…

4 What is IIF? IIF is a commitment, both personal and organizational, to create an environment absent of injury. It is NOT a Goal, Result or Trophy to seek or acquire. It is however, a Mindset Intolerant of any Level, Frequency of Severity of Injury… (JMJ)® This is the definition as given by JMJ… Please note the last sentence… The word Intolerant is used for a very specific reason… IIF is about Choices and People make choices… Intolerant describes the viewpoint of an IIF committed individual. Commitment - a promise, pledge, vow, obligation or dedication.. Steadfastness, allegiance, faithful and Indifference… Intolerant – Refusing to accept differences!!! Showing an Unwillingness or refusal to accept people or actions that are different from your beliefs, or lifestyles that differ from your own…

5 What is IIF? Subjective Objective JMJ ®
Stress the absolute importance of being GREAT in ALL FOUR Quadrants… We learned a lot about our culture … In early training sessions we heard things like… But there isn’t enough money or budget to do it safe… We will never meet the schedule if we have to do it the Safe Way…. I recall one particular meeting we were discussing our New 12 hour work policy.. When one of the more seasoned managers stood up and said… This won’t work we don’t have the qualified people to run three shifts.. So what are you going to do STOP THE DREDGE!!! And very straight faced and sincerely we answered… Yes, that is an option…. The four quadrants are invaluable to achieve an Incident Free workplace… One without the others just doesn’t cover the realm of Incident possibilities… Tell the subcontractor story… Crane hitting the powerlines… Blew the mans foot off… World class safety process… Pre Lift checklist was completed, Experienced operator… Culture their…. We and They…. JMJ ®

6 What is IIF? In a Word it is about…. Relationship

7 Relationships are the Key to Accomplishment
If we work on building the Relationship --- the Opportunity of Accomplishment increases proportionally… Relationship JMJ®

8 Relationships With Safety/Rules With Coworkers With Clients
With Compliance/Commitment With Ourselves Ask yourself..”If that were my Kid, would I feel comfortable having him do that”???

9 Why IIF?? Rules and Regulations are NOT enough
Safety Cops are ineffective One injured worker is Unacceptable Rules + PPE Safe At Manson – “Nothing we do is worth anyone getting hurt”

10 Less Safe/At Risk Behaviors*
Death LWC Recordable Medical Only First Aid (Near Miss) Less Safe/At Risk Behaviors* What is the difference between a Near Miss and a Death??? Who controls that???? We only have control of the behaviors in the base… If we shrink the number of behaviors we shrink the OPPORTUNITY for everything else,, Proportionately…

11 Certainty So, We must ask….
If we continue to put ourselves at Risk and allow our co-workers to be at Risk, someone will get hurt… It is not a matter of IF but WHEN! So, We must ask….

12 Why do we put ourselves At Risk?
Schedule Budget Time Equipment or the Lack thereof We did it this way – Last Time It is what the company Expects of us!!! There is a saying JMJ used that I like: Many incidents are caused by “Willing Workers doing what they perceive we want done… Workers are a reflection of US… the company culture…. Changing the culture is Our job…

13 Three Key Challenges.. Observing my co-workers and catching myself preoccupied or “Asleep at the Wheel.” Speaking up when I see someone At Risk. Being open to change when someone speaks to me.

14 Three Key Challenges.. Observing my co-workers and catching myself preoccupied or “Asleep at the Wheel.” Speaking up when I see someone At Risk. Being open to change when someone speaks to me.

15 So who do we need to work on to get to an Injury Free workplace?
Simply work on ourselves Work on our relationships Work on our Company outlook And commit to change… Oh Yes… And this does take time and energy… Remember from the definition Steadfastness and Indifference!!!! This is where those are being exhibited… Listening to your workforce is imperative…. Selecting items to change or cause a shift in the culture is the key… For Manson one of those was our commitment to our 12 hour work policy… that was a paramount culture shift and frankly still is being tested… It takes Steadfast commitment to shift a 100 year old culture….

16 Manson’s Process Everyone is worthy and deserves treatment as a human.. We introduce IIF and it’s initial concept immediately upon hire. Within 60 – 90 days all employees are given a 4 hour IIF orientation. IIF in Action training has been given to All supervisors and follow ups are being planned. Local “Champions” groups continue to carry on conversations with field and project personnel.

Save this for near the end… Time depending!!! 19 Leading the Manson Way Making IIF a part of Me
Planning and Forethought Ethical and Fair Compassion for ourselves and others Making IIF a part of Me

20 Why IIF at Manson Excerpt from article sent to IDR… ‘Like most we looking for an objective approach to upgrade our safety program and ultimately reduce our injury record. What we found is that we had all the tools for that to happen in place and what we really had to work on was Ourselves and Our Attitude toward safety’…
