2. What is an adjective? Describes a noun.
The fat cat chased the small cats.
In English, adjectives are placed BEFORE the noun it is describing.
In Spanish, adjectives are placed after the noun.
The fat cat
El gato gordo
The serious students
Los estudiantes serios.

3. Noun – Adjective Agreement
Adjectives must match (in gender and number) the nouns they are describing.
They can be masculine, feminine, singular, or plural.
Masculine:
El chico alto Los chicos altos
The tall boy The tall boys
Feminine:
La chica alta Las chicas altas
The tall girl The tall girls

7. Adjective Agreement
Adjectives that end in –e already match both genders.
They only have singular and plural forms.
Masculine:
El maestro inteligente Los maetros inteligentes
The intelligent teacher The intelligent teachers
Feminine:
La maestra inteligente Las maestras inteligentes

The big woman
The big man

9. Adjectives that end in consonants
Many adjectives that end in a consonant match both genders.
They only have singular and plural forms.
Masculine:
El amigo joven Los amigos jovenes
The young friend The young friends
Feminine:
La amiga joven Las amigas jovenes

10. Adjectives that end in consonants
Some adjectives that end in consonants must add an –a to form the feminine singular.
YOU MUST MEMORIZE THESE!!!
Masculine:
El chico trabajador
The hard-working boy
Feminine:
La chica trabajadora
The hard-working girl

To make adjectives plural, follow the same rule for nouns (not z).
If an adjective / noun ends in a vowel add –s
If an adjective / noun ends in a consonant add –es .
Masculine:
Los chicos trabajadores
The hard-working boys
Feminine:
Las chicas trabajadoras
The hard-working girls
