Learning Objective: To understand the events that led to Hitler becoming the undisputed Fuhrer of Germany in 1934 Learning Outcome: To explain (c+ skills) how Hitler consolidated (secured) his power

You need to print two- chancellor to dictator and Print these off and stick it into your book. Research the Reichstag Fire and the Night of the Long Knives. Must be in your own words Research to be printed and stuck/written into your books.

3 Starter Task Read the paragraph on page 272 in Walsh.
Then consider the photograph on the next slide to answer the question….

Come up with four reasons and explain them with the person next you.

5 Hitler 1933 This was Hitler’s position in January What does it suggest? Who are the people in the image? WRITE three statements to summarise Hitler’s position in 1933.

7 In January 1933-Hitler was in a weak position;
Only 2 other Nazi’s had positions in the New Government. Nazi’s support had fallen from 37% to 33% during To control the Reichstag he needed at least 50% of the vote. Hitler could be sacked by President Hindenburg at any time. Hindenburg and Franz Von Papen planned to use Hitler like a puppet from ‘behind the scenes’.

8 By the end of 1934 Hitler was in a totally different position;
Von Papen had resigned. Hindenburg was dead. Hitler was President and Chancellor- The Fuhrer The army had taken an oath of personal loyalty to Hitler. The Nazi’s were the ONLY political party. How had this happened?

How had Hitler’s position changed from the start of when he was made Chancellor to the end of 1934 when he declared himself the Fuhrer of Germany. 20 Why had Hitler become Dictator of Germany?
Hitler used propaganda to make himself seem respectable and the solution to Germany’s problems.- made himself seem a good and trusted leader Dealt with the Communists and criminals quickly after Reichstag Fire making it look like he was bringing Order to Germany. Violence and intimidation- Nazis used the SS and the SA to bully and attack their opponents- like when they stopped Communists from voting in the Enabling Act and arresting and attacking the Communists after the Reichstag fire Why had Hitler become Dictator of Germany? Hitler made compromises with people to make them trust him like the Von Papen so that he could get a majority in the Reichstag and pass laws like the Enabling Act which gave him ultimate power and control Hitler acted legally- he used the Weimar constitution to get power by passing laws like the Enabling Act. This made him seem respectable and law abiding and so people trusted him. He also used the law to ban the Communists after the Reichstag fire.

21 Plenary You have 5 minutes to come up with a 60 second short speech that explains how and why Hitler was able to become the Dictator of Germany by August Some of these will be presented to the rest of the class
