2. What is a phrase?
A phrase is a group of words that does not have a subject or a predicate.
A phrase cannot stand alone as a sentence.
Examples:
1. remembered for centuries
2. a gesture of friendship

3. Phrase or not a phrase??? Fell down in the hole.
I stopped at the mall.
Hit with a ball.
He ran to the store.
Picked up the stick.

4. What is an independent clause?
An independent clause contains both a subject and a predicate.
It expresses a complete thought and can stand alone as a sentence.
Examples:
Larry lives in Italy.
Mary is a teacher.

5. Independent clause or not???
She ran to the store to pick up milk.
Mr. Best is our principal.
The dog.
I am a good speller.

6. What is a dependent clause?
A dependent clause has a subject and a predicate, but it does not express a complete thought. It cannot stand alone as a sentence.
Dependent clauses often begin with connecting words such as because, although, when, which, that, and since.
Examples:
when he laughed
because I can’t

7. Dependent clause or not????
Because she felt sleepy.
He slept until noon.
Mr. Miller is a doctor.
Although it was finished.

8. Complex Sentences
Complex sentences are made up of an independent clause and a dependent clause.
Example:
When you arrived, I felt so happy.
(dependent clause) (independent clause)
The two clauses are joined by a comma!!!
