4 Page 58 – True or False First, copy down the following statements into your notes leaving 2 spaces in between each statement: 1. The Roman Empire did not help the Church become widespread across Europe. 2. The Catholic Church was very powerful. 3. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Catholic Church hurt the stability of the region. 4. Excommunication and Interdicts were ineffective at curbing bad behavior from the people. 5. Pax Dei and Treuga Dei existed to create peace.

5 The Great Schism In 1054, the Roman Catholic Church split into two groups: ▫Roman Catholic  Leo was making reforms and gaining power ▫Eastern Orthodox  Michael Cerularius attacked RC practices ▫Leo excommunicates Michael Cerularius Both Popes want power!!

6 Come up with a solution If the East and the West divide, it will decrease the total power of the Catholic Church. What can be done? In your pairs, on the sheet of paper provided: ▫Identify which of you is representing the East ▫Identify which of you is representing the West ▫Propose 3 solutions to the problem of the church separating

7 Maybe we should ask a mediator… All of the Westerners slide to the window ▫Assign a team captain All of the Easterners over to the wall ▫Assign a team captain You will have 3 minutes to prepare your solution for Ms. Wrede’s judgment. Based on the validity of your case, she will award one side a victor. Winning team’s captain will determine what we do during the last 5 minutes of class on Friday!
