2 2 Definitions  AIDS: Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome  HIV: Human Immunodeficiency Virus  AIDS is caused by the HIV virus

3 3 HIV can be transmitted by…  Unprotected sex (vaginal fluids, semen, anal mucous)  Shared & used unsterilized needles-tattoos, body piercing, drug use.  Passed on to a baby…Pregnancy-delivery by an infected mother  Breast milk  Blood

5 5 You can’t catch AIDS by…  Kissing/Hugging/Shaking hands  Sharing food/drinks  Cough or sneeze  Using a cell phone  Sitting on the toilet seat  Visiting someone with HIV in the hospital  Mosquitos

6 6 HIV infections  AIDS is no longer just a GAY or OLD person’s disease.  It is easier for women to contract AIDS.

7 7 Do teens get HIV?  70% of all new infections are people among the ages of 15 – 25 years old.  Teenagers are most at risk.

8 8 Global HIV  33.4 million are currently living with HIV/AIDS  More than 25 million people have died from AIDS since 1981.  97% of HIV cases are found in Africa.

10 10 HIV Cases in U.S. EEvery 9.5 minutes someone in the U.S. is infected with HIV MMore than 1.3 million people are unaware & living with HIV in the U.S. AAfrican Americans are the highest percentage of all the races with HIV

11 11 Death Toll  AIDS is currently the 5 th leading cause of death in the US among people in the age group of 25 – 44 years old.  Approximately 2 million people died from AIDS.

12 12 New Infections IIt is estimated that 2 teens in the U.S. are infected every hour. 550 teens a day or one teen getting infected in every state.

13 13 Risky Spread of HIV in Teens  50% of high school students have had sexual intercourse.  25% of students had unprotected sex while under the influence of drugs and or alcohol.  16% of those high school students have had up to 4 partners by the end of their senior year.

14 14 STI & HIV  A person with an untreated STI is more likely to pass on or acquire HIV during sex.  Chances of infection increases 10– 300 times when a partner has genital ulcers, syphilis, or genital herpes.

15 15 ASYMPTOMATIC 11 out of 5 of those infected with HIV don’t know they are infected TThis is because they are asymptomatic

16 Signs & Symptoms 16

17 17 Testing  It takes your body approximately 3–6 months for the antibodies to show up in a test.  It’s very important to abstain from sex for 3–6 months until you get re- tested.

18 18 Signs of Opportunistic Diseases  Opportunistic disease: Diseases, that people with normal immune systems do not get.  Pneumocystis Carinii pneumonia Kaposi’s sarcoma-rare skin cancer

19 19 Other Symptoms FFlu-like symptoms: Diarrhea Rash Head ache Fever Swollen glands

20 20 Treatment  Today those who receive treatment live an average of 22 to 24 years.  In 1993, the average was 7 years.

21 21 AIDS in Hawaii AAccording to the DOH (Dept. of Health) Hawaii had 982 HIV and 3,352 AIDS cases in 2011. AApproximately 4,334 cases total (HIV and AIDS) in the state. 444%, 1,909 died from AIDS
