1 Why do we teach PDHPE?? Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) is concerned with developing students with knowledge and understanding, skills, values and attitudes that will enable children to lead healthy and fulfilling lives. (Board of Studies, NSW, 2007) PDHPE is an important learning area as it; Encourages an understanding and valuing of self and others Promotes physical activity Emphasises informed decision making leading to effective and responsible action

2 PDHPE K-6 Syllabus PDHPE learning areas focus on important issues in regards to individual development. Develop 5 fundamental skills; o Communicating o Decision Making o Interacting o Moving o Problem Solving These skills are acquired over the following subject matter; o Safety o Sexuality o Growth and development o Sport o Drug education o Food and nutrition o Ethics o Relationships o Health promotion o Traffic safety o Fitness and recreation Tinning, McCuaig and Hunter, 2006.

3 Social View of PDHPE!! BULLYING 20% of children in Australian schools have been subjected to bullying (Healey, 2001). PDHPE is the only KLA which addresses bullying in the syllabus. It’s syllabus allows teachers to address the concerns of bullying.

4 Nutrition- Eating Well PDHPE addresses poor eating habits, as a result leads to increased levels of obesity Allows for students to develop healthy eating choices Go for 2 & 5 Sometimes food

5 Being Active Advances in technology have lead to an increase in child obesity (Tinning, McCuaig and Hunter, 2006). PDHPE allows children to experience participation in sports and recreation. Invasion games, Striking and fielding games, Target games, Dance and Gymnastics All of these help develop a child’s knowledge, skills and attitudes towards being active.
