Science Chapter 4 & 5 Test

Reviewing Vocabulary Chapter 4 All of the living and non living things in an area is an ecosystem. In certain pond, fish, insect, and algae interact with other living things and their surroundings to form a community. Climate is the type of weather that occurs in an area over a long period of time.

In temperate forest biomes, the leaves of aspen trees are green in summer and yellow in winter. Rabbits and grasses with little or no trees visible is typical of a tundra. Grasslands experience periods of heavy rain as well as distinct dry periods.

Hot, humid weather is typical of tropical rain forests all year long. A food chain describes how energy in an ecosystem flows from one organism to another. Living things include plants, animals, and other forms not visible to the naked eye. Non living things include light, soil, water, and air gases.

Animals that live in the intertidal zone are able to move about over land and underwater. They often have features that prevent them from being dragged out to sea.

How energy flows from the Sun through the ecosystem. Producers use energy from the Sun to make food. Consumers get their energy by eating producers. Decomposers return energy from dead producers and consumers to the environment.

Ways the energy flows from the Sun to human beings. Plants use energy from the Sun to make food, and humans eat plants. Animals eat plants, and humans eat these animals.

Reviewing Vocabulary Chapter 5 The place where an organism lives, grows, and develops is its habitat. A niche describes what an organism does in the place where it lives. Long-lasting relationships between two different kinds of organisms is symbiosis. Predators hunt and eat other animals. Animals that are hunted and eaten by other animals are prey.

Extinction occurs when all of the members of a species die out. Endangered species are close to becoming extinct. Driving cars and adding fertilizer to lawns cause environmental pollution.

Earthworms! Earthworms have a niche. Earthworms benefit other living things that share its habitat. Earthworms aerate and help distribute nutrients through the soil. Plants benefit from healthy soil and primary consumers benefit from healthy plant life.

In response to changes in the climate and available resources, living things adapt, move, or perish.

The Possum Predators are known to eat only those animals they kill themselves. The opossum seems to make the perfect prey: it is small, moves slowly, and is not know to be aggressive. The opossum will pass out and “play dead” when it is scared. This adaptation has helped the species survive. Why?

The Possum Continued… Predators will not eat animals they have not killed themselves. So, animals that are able to “play dead” are more likely to survive and reproduce and pass their abilities to their offspring. SMART Possum!

Good Luck! ◦ Remember that I believe in you!  Mrs. Gibson
