1 The English Colonies Mercantilism became leading economic system in the 1600s Navigation Acts control trade to and from the American colonies benefitting both the England and the Colonists Massachusetts violated law, King cracks down on them(increases tension) After Glorious Revolution in Britain settles into a policy of salutary neglect This helps plant the seeds of self government in the colonies

2 South & Agriculture Soil of South lends to development of agrarian based economy Cash crops make some planters rich Quickly large, powerful almost self sufficient plantations develop and dominate trade Plantation economy brings prosperity to very few Women and indentured servants have almost no rights Seen as physically able to handle demands of hard labor in harsh climates, African slaves become large part of plantation system

3 Southern Economy Numbers of slaves dramatically increase, come to America on the “middle passage” Travel was harsh and dangerous(20%+ die in route) Despite some cultural differences, many slaves maintain some traditions Few “rebellions "pop up

4 Northern Colonies Very diverse economies in the North are thriving by mid 1700s Seaports become busy cities(pros and cons) Colonies become increasingly diverse Slavery does exist in North but on less of scale Women in North still have few rights Social and economic tensions give rise to Salem Witch Trials

5 Northern Colonies Enlightenment and Great Awakening both stress individualism and questioning of authority which helps lay foundation for revolution THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR France and England have been rivals for decades France still holds large areas of North America French are focused on making money, not creating settlements Early French victories lessen colonial respect for British Army

6 The French and Indian War British win decisive victory at Quebec in 1759, begins to take control of lands east of Mississippi River and large pieces of Canada Treaty of Paris of 1763 ends war Proclamation of 1763 forbids English settlers from west of Appalachian Mountains To protect new lands, British Army is stationed on frontier To Pay off war debt, King raises taxes and cracks down on smuggling in colonies Seen as threats to freedom
