1 Energy SOL 3.11 Students will investigate and understand different sources of energy. Bill Nye Energy Video

2 What does natural mean? Coming from the earth Not made by a person.

3 What are natural sources of energy?
Turn and talk? Did you say…

4 Renewable and Nonrenewable
When you renew a library book what do you do? If a materials is renewable then it must….. Be able to be used again!

5 Renewable and Nonrenewable
Energy can be either renewable or nonrenewable. Renewable means it can be used again. Non-renewable means once it is used it can not be used again Video clip-

6 The Sun! Turn and talk- How does the sun helps us? Did you say?

7 The Sun The sun gives us energy. This is called solar energy
The sun is the MAJOR source of energy on this planet! Renewable energy Solar Energy Video Clip How was solar energy used to help Martha?

8 How does Solar Energy Help Us?
Gives us heat Gives us light Helps plants grow Does not create pollution  Create electricity through Solar Panels  Solar plants and panels are very expensive. It is hard to store this energy so you can use it later!

9 Wind Wind power can be used through buildings called wind mills.
Windmills were used in the past to help grind grain for bread. Renewable energy!

10 Wind Energy Renewable energy!  Does not create pollution 
Can only be used on windy days  Does not produce enough energy to power large cities.  Takes up a lot of space  Can be a danger to birds and bats 

11 Wind Energy The force of flowing air can generate electricity.
Today people build wind farms to help gather wind energy. Wind Farms:

12 Water Energy Water can be used as energy
When water moves quickly it can be used to create energy or electricity. It produces no pollution and there is a lot of water!  Renewable energy! 

13 Examples of how we use water energy!
Dams, Mills, Steamboats Dams are expensive Sometimes they cause floods

14 Water Energy There is a lot of water to use! 
No water in the desert  There could be a drought  Can be dangerous to fish 

15 Fossil Fuels Type of energy that we get from the ground.
Plants and animals die and after years and years they become fossils.

16 Different Types of Fossil Fuels
Coal- a solid form of energy Gas- a gas form of energy Oil- a liquid form of energy

17 Fossil Fuels All are Non-renewable!
It takes millions of years for the formation of fossils to form. They give us a lot of energy!  They help power our homes, cars, and schools! But all three cause air pollution 

18 How do we get fossil fuels?
We dig deep into the dirt and into the ocean.

19 Oil We know how to get it! 
We have used a lot of it, and we are always looking for more  Can be harmful it is spills!  Non-renewable  Drilling is destructive to land 

20 Digging for Oil

21 Natural Gas Easy to get  It is found in the US 
It is non-renewable  It makes less pollution than the other fuels!   Drilling to get it can be destructive to land! 

22 Getting Natural Gas

23 Coal Easy to get  There is a lot of it.  It is non-renewable 
It make a lot of pollution.  It is destruction to the land and environment to get it 

24 Getting Coal

25 Wood How can wood be used as energy? How can it help us?
Renewable or non-renewable? Make heat

26 Wood Renewable  Cutting down trees will change animal habitats 
Tree take a long time to grow  Burning air is air pollution 

27 Electricity Electricity is produced by.. Burning coal Solar energy
Wind energy Water energy

28 Nuclear Energy Nuclear Power Plants have scientists that create Nuclear Energy It is very powerful Can be dangerous if not managed carefully!  Nuclear plants are expensive to build 

29 Conserve Energy What does conserve mean? Synonyms: Save, preserve
How can we conserve energy?

31 Name: _________________________________________
Name: _________________________________________ Date: ___________________________ Use your notebook to answer these questions. You must highlight your proof for each question. What is the main source of energy on this earth? _____________________________________ What 2 ways does the sun help this planet? ________________________ ________________________________ What two ways is solar energy good for the environment? _____________________ _____________________ Name one good things and one bad thing about using dams: __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Name three ways windmills are used all over the Earth __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Renewable and Nonrenewable What are the three natural forms of energy? __________________________________________________________ What is renewable energy? _______________________________________________________________________ Name three examples of renewable resources: _______________________________________________________ What does nonrenewable mean? __________________________________________________________________ Name three nonrenewable resources: ______________________________________________________________ How does coal help us? __________________________________________________________________________ What is a drawback to using fossil fuels? _____________________________________________________________________________________________ Now after reading use your notebook to list 8 forms of energy:

32 Energy Performance Assessment
Name: _______________________________________________ Date: _________________________________________ Energy Performance Assessment 14 pts. Task: You must create a poster to support which source of energy do you think is the best for us to use. There is no wrong or right answer to this question. Complete this checklist first and then create your poster. All information on this checklist must go on your poster! What energy type do you think is the best? _______________________________________________________________ Where does this energy come from? __________________________________________________________________ Two ways this energy helps us: (2 pts.) _________________________________________________________________________________________________ Is this energy renewable or non-renewable? _________________________________________________________________________________________________ Name one way this is better than another energy form __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Poster checklist Use the boxes above to check off each part as you add it to your poster. You must also include the following Title- naming your energy source Include at least 2 illustrations ( 2 pts.) The entire page is used Words are spelled correctly Work is neat and clear (2 pts.) Uses persuasion For example: tell why your is the best, compare it to another energy source, or tell why another source is bad, Total score: __________________________________ Grade: ______________
