Electric Currents Let’s Review…. An electric current is a flow of electric charges along a wire in a circuit.

What is an electric current? An electric current consists of electrons that flow from the negative terminal to the positive terminal of a cell or battery. + -

A circuit is the path that is made for an electric current.

Simple Circuits Here is a simple electric circuit. It has a cell, a lamp and a switch. To make the circuit, these components are connected together with metal connecting wires. cell lamp switch wires

Series Circuit A circuit that only has one path for current to flow through is called a series circuit.

Simple Circuits When the switch is closed, the lamp lights up. This is because there is a continuous path of metal for the electric current to flow around. If there were any breaks in the circuit, the current could not flow.

Types of Circuits There are two types of electrical circuits; SERIES CIRCUITSPARALLEL CIRCUITS

If one part of the path in a parallel circuit is removed, the current continues to flow through the other paths of the circuit.

Activity Materials Paper sack for each student Scissors Science book Science journal Pencil Crayons and or colored pencils

Procedure for Electric Circuits and Magnets Foldable Pass out a sack to each student. Today you are going to make a sack foldable to help review what you have learned about electric circuits and magnets. This foldable will be attached into your journal when you are finished.

Step 1 Make sure that the sack is folded flat on your desk. Using the bottom of your sack, fold your sack 2x to cause a crease in the side of your sack. Start from the bottom and fold up to the using the bottom as your guide.

Step 2 With your scissors, cut one side of your sack from top to bottom so that you have 2 flaps that form 2 doors. STOP AT THE BOTTOM FOLD! DO NOT CUT THROUGH THE BOTTOM! STOP!

Step 3 Now cut smaller flaps in each side. STOP at the fold! LOOK AT RED LINE! DO NOT CUT the fold! Remember, this is only one side of your sack. The other side you leave it alone!!!

Step 4 Now label your flaps as follows: Magnets Electromagnets Circuits Diagram of a circuit On the right side, you will draw pictures of each to match the term. magnets electromagnets Circuits Diagram of a circuit Pictures go on this side

Step 5 Now fold your sack so that it is flat on your desk again with the flaps on top. Underneath each flap, you will define and write about what you know about each term. When you lift each flap, it should look as if you are opening a door to information. Be creative and neat! You will be graded on accuracy of information and neatness!
