1 A C B 1.Draw this circuit diagram neatly in your book 2.Label the direction of current flow around the circuit. 4. Build the circuit and measure the current at points A, B and C. Record your results. 5. Write a sentence to describe your findings. How do you think the current would change if you added another bulb or cell? Point in Circuit Current (A) A B C Investigating Current in Series and Parallel Circuits 3. Copy the table to record your results.

2 Now we will see how the current behaves in a parallel circuit. A B C D FE 1.Draw the circuit diagram and label the direction of the current. 2.Build your circuit. This time use one 3.5V bulb (marked green) and one 6V bulb (marked red). 3.Measure the current at each of the points labelled A – F. 4.Record your results neatly in a table. Point in Circuit Current (A) A B C D E F

3 A B C D FE You should have found that: - the currents at A and B were equal - the currents at C and D were equal - the currents at E and F were equal Write a few sentences to explain your findings - think about the path the charges follow from the point they leave the positive terminal until they return to the negative terminal. - what happens to the current at each of the junctions? - How are the currents at A, C and E connected?

4 A B C D FE You should have found that the rule for current in parallel circuits is very simple! It is known as… The currents at E and C should add to equal the current at A. The currents at F and D should add to equal the current at B. Kirchoff’s first law: The current flowing into a junction is equal to the current flowing out of a junction.
