1 Bell Ringer – 3/4/08 Welcome to March! March Madness (9 th ), St. Patrick’s Day (17 th ), Spring(21 st ), & Easter (23 rd) await you! Write a paragraph describing what you learned, and/or were struck by while watching last week’s portion of Roots.

2 American Indian Country  Most Amer. Indians lived west of the Mississippi River  Americans & the U.S. government continued to try to gain additional Indian land after the Civil War  Many Indians agreed to live on reservations where they felt safe and land was protected

3 Bureau of Indian Affairs  The BIA was the agency responsible for managing American Indian issues  The BIA encouraged and sometimes forced Indians to move to reservations  Promised supplies were sometimes never granted and reservation land was reduced

7 George A. Custer  U.S. General  Led an attack on the Sioux Indians with 600 tired Army soldiers. The Sioux Indians killed all of his men within one hour (1876)  The shock of this defeat led the U.S. to increase relocation of Indians to reservations

8 Assimilating American Indians  Many Americans viewed assimilation (cultural absorption) into “white America” as the only long-term way to Indian survival  Children forced to attend American schools to learn English; families forced to learn farming
