Radical Republicans Radical Republicans wanted to give rights to the Freedmen and punish the South Led by Thaddeus Stevens in the House and Charles Sumner in the Senate

1866 Congressional Elections Victory for the Radicals—gained control of the House & the Senate Congress had the strength to override any veto Believed this was a mandate (command) from the public to create their own Reconstruction Plan

Come up with your own plan… Lastly, with your group… – Come up with your own plan for Reconstruction You can use parts from each plan You should solve the issues of… – Who should be granted amnesty? – How many people should pledge loyalty to be readmitted? – What rights should freedmen have? – What role should ex Confederates play in the United States government?

14th Amendment 1.All people born in the US— granted citizenship (including African-Americans) 2.No state may deny a person equal protection under the law If a state did not follow the 14th Amendment— representation in Congress would be reduced

Radical Reconstruction Radical Republicans passed the Reconstruction Act of 1867 Reconstruction Act: 1.Split the South into 5 military districts controlled by Union generals 2.Former Confederate officials could not hold office and were disenfranchised (could not vote) 3.Former Confederates states must write new constitutions—ratify the 14 th Amendment 4.African-Americans must be allowed to vote
