1 Objectives: Students will identify different verbs and their function in sentences. Questions Verbs (Action) and/or connections verb: a verb is a word used to express an action, a condition, or state of being. action verb: tells what its subject does. The action it expresses can be either physical or mental. Examples: Early humans moved constantly. (physical action) These people feared large animals. (mental action)

2 Questions and/or Connections Verbs (Linking) Linking Verbs: connects a noun or pronoun w/ a word that identifies or describes it Forms of be: be, am, is, are, was, were, been, being Verbs that express condition: appear, become, feel, grow, look, remain, seem, smell, taste. **Some verbs can serve as either action or linking verbs.**

3 Questions and/or Connections Verbs (Helping) Helping Verbs: are added before another verb to make a verb phrase HELPING VERBSVERB PHRASE am has been was will did am growing has been sleeping was swimming will participate did clean

4 Action vs. Linking – identify the verb(s). After each verb(s) write AV for action verb and LV for linking verb. 1)The father looked at his family. 2) He was sad. 3) His family looked so tiny from the ship. 4) Many immigrants stayed in New York. 5) Suddenly the sun broke through the clouds.

5 Helping and Main Verbs – Copy the sentence. Circle the helping verb and underline the main verb. 1.We have eaten all the cookies. 2.Bob may have passed his driver’s test! 3.Joey can eat an entire watermelon. 4.Samantha is auditioning for the school play. 5.She will stop the video soon.
