5 PRESENTATIONAL DEVICEs Things that are used in addition to the writing in a text. They enhance the meaning of what has written about. Most non ‐ fiction texts contain presentational devices To helps the reader to understand the writer’s point of view. The devices used depend on: Purpose-what the text is trying to do (inform, advice, persuade) Audience- who is it trying to communicate to (children, adults, men, women)

6 Layout: Is the layout eye-catching? Is it divided up into columns. Is it divided up by pictures, sub-heading or bullet points? Is It written in long paragraphs without any break? Structure: Writer’s use different form of structures to get their perspective across for example they can use: Short paragraphs Bullet points Images Colour Sub-headings Title, Font size& style, Captions, Chart & diagram, Logo… Layout & Structure

8 Colours Colour is a slightly more subtle Used to enhance the meaning of their texts. We relate different feelings with what different colours represent. It is important to think about how colour is used in a text. Very often it can be used as a way of directing us to think in a certain way This is because of what we associate each colour with.

9 Font size & style The different font styles that a writer uses are key to their strategy in communicating with the audience. The writer may adopt particular font styles in order to draw the attention to a specific point or to distinguish between different words or phrases in the text.

10 HEADING & SUB-HEADING Title plays a central role in any text They dictate the tone and meaning of the text from the outset. A title is more than a description of a text’s content, it tells to the reader the view that the writer is taking to a topic. Some titles may have hidden meaning that only becomes clearer once the text has been read Alternatively, they might also indicate, from the out set, the writer’s perspective on a particular topic. Sub ‐ headings are both a presentational and structural device. They help to divide information clearly so that the reader can easily follow the information

11 Logos Logos are important because they do two main things. Firstly, they promote the company we associate the logo with. Secondly, they represent the values and ideals of the company.

15 Charts and Diagrams(statistics) Allows the writer to present lots of information (numeric) into an easily understandable visual. It allows the writer to present data As a way of presenting measureable fact to support their ideas.
