4 In your new exercise books answer the following question with one paragraph: What makes the speaker in ‘Stealing’ so fascinating?

5 Remember to use this structure: Point = One of the things that makes the speaker so fascinating in ‘Stealing’ is… Evidence = Quotation Analysis = This makes him fascinating because… Language = The word/phrase is interesting/powerful because

6  With your partner discuss your best memory or memories from primary school  How have you changed since coming to secondary?

7  Myra Hindley and Ian Brady sexually assaulted and killed four children between 1963 and 1965.  Only three of the bodies were discovered.  Myra Hindley died in 2002. Ian Brady is still in prison.

8  Read through the poem twice.  With your partner discuss what we are told in the poem.  What does Carol Ann Duffy think about her teacher? How do you know?

9  The poet tries to engage the reader’s memories about primary school through the use of the five senses.  Highlight any examples of the five senses you can find.  What do these tell us about Duffy’s thoughts about school?

10  Duffy also uses similes to express her fondness for her school days  Highlight and comment on any examples you can find.

11  Duffy describes a bell and a xylophone in a very human way.  Highlight and comment on what this tells the reader

12  Does Duffy do anything else interesting with language to help create more images in our minds?

13  Does the poem look like a traditional poem?  What about the punctuation? What is unusual about this? Why did Duffy choose to do this?

14 Write one paragraph to answer the following:  How does Duffy use imagery to help the reader understand her thoughts about school?
