2 Kublai Khan died in 1294 By 1368, Mongols driven out of China Zhu Yuanzhang became emperor Relocated the capital to Nanjing in the south Founded Ming -- “Brilliant” Dynasty

3 Zhu took the name “Hong Wu” or “Military Emperor”

4 Killed anyone suspected of treason Son Yong Le took over in 1398 Moved capital back to Beijing in 1421 Built palaces in “Imperial City” (center known as the Forbidden City)

6 Ming Reform Restored the civil service exams and made them even harder Compiled a census (count of the people) Rebuilt canals and farms Increased trade – expanded Grand Canal

8 Zheng He - Chinese Muslim =led huge expedition –62 large ships –250 smaller ships –28,000 men Traveled to India, the Persian Gulf, and East Africa China’s people and culture spread for a while, but soon Confucian officials put a stop to Chinese exploration
