Colony- group of people in one place ruled by a parent country elsewhere
Early colonists were loyal to the King of England

4. Jamestown Virginia
1607 Jamestown Virginia became the first American settlement
Founded by the Virginia Company– group of London merchants
Jamestown was a Joint-Stock Company
Joint-Stock Company- investors get partial ownership in a share of the colony’s profits
Colonists formed first American legislature in 1619: House of Burgesses
Charter- written document granting land and authority to a government

6. Mayflower Compact
Pilgrims from England arrived in Plymouth Massachusetts in 1620
Before their ship reached shore, the Pilgrims set up their government in the Mayflower Compact
Mayflower Compact was the first written form of government in America
Compact- agreement among people
The Mayflower Compact set up a direct democracy

7. Fundamental Order of Connecticut
Some Pilgrims in Massachusetts were persecuted for their religion so they moved to Conn
Fundamental Order of Connecticut was the first Constitution in America
It called for an assembly and elections for representatives, governors, and judges

9. Religion Pilgrims and Puritans came to Massachusetts
However, they were not always tolerant of other religions
1600s Puritans in Salem and other Massachusetts towns held trials for people accused of witchcraft and 19 people were killed
Quakers came to Pennsylvania
Catholics came to Maryland
Roger Williams was kicked out of Massachusetts and founded Rhode Island

Small farms were located outside of towns
