Weddington Primary School Assessing without levels

At the end of the school year the following wording will be used to report children’s working levels for reading, writing and maths: A child will be working towards expected standard if they have not achieved all the objectives set out for their year group. They will be given appropriate support to enable them to work towards achieving the objectives. This may take the form of different activities within the classroom or small group work outside the classroom.

A child will be working at expected standard if they have achieved all the expected objectives for their curriculum year.

A child will be working at a greater depth within the expected standard if they are working beyond the standard for their year group. For these children the teachers will provide a range of learning opportunities that offer a greater depth and breadth of understanding specific to their year group, rather than moving on to the next year’s curriculum. They will work on mastering their knowledge and understanding through the application of skills in different contexts. For example, in maths they will develop the skills of problem solving and reasoning.

Early Years Within the first six weeks of the children starting school a baseline assessment will be carried out. The children will continue to be assessed in the prime and specific areas of learning throughout the year. Their assessments will be based on observation of daily activities and events. At the end of the year the children will be assessed against the early learning goals.

Pupils in Year 2 and Year 6 will still be assessed and tested using the new national test materials. Further details of the new SAT’s tests will be given to parents/carers of children in these year groups when staff have received appropriate training from the local authority.

Children with Special Needs As children with severe and complex learning needs are likely to be working at a curriculum level below that of their peers their progress will be measured against their individual targets. P levels and standardised scores from professional assessments will continue to be reported at children’s Annual Reviews.
