Walter Snoeys – CERN – PH – ESE – ME –TOTEM October 2009 TOTEM Electronics Status

Walter Snoeys – CERN – PH – ESE – ME –TOTEM October 2009 Electronics  220m RP station of sector 5-6 brought up and running (only 1 VFAT out of 240 does not respond correctly).  With installation of T2 and RP at 220m significant progress and experience with the overall electronics system  Quite intense cabling activity, also on optical fibers for better protection and flexibility. Cabling in the tunnel complete, gradually moving to final configuration in the counting room  New repeater modules for electrical trigger signals (RP 220m) tested with final cables and signal generator. Now moving to test with real VFAT signals.  Printed circuit boards production problems and detailed detector electronics status: see next slides  Electronics providing interlocks for the machine currently under test after many iterations with the machine

Walter Snoeys – CERN – PH – ESE – ME –TOTEM October 2009  First production had soldering problem, some work, but can fail ‘any day’. CMS has received ~25 boards like this, and TOTEM ~20  After diagnosis new production recovering some of the components. First recovery phase finished and two new batches delivered:  10 5 delivered to TOTEM, 5 to CMS (with visit of Gueorgui and Sylvain to Israel)  24 all delivered to CMS, several with problems (4 defective, other 5 with workaround).  Communication with the company not easy – questions on the components, test results at the company, etc…  Need to speed up production. Host board status

Walter Snoeys – CERN – PH – ESE – ME –TOTEM October 2009 DOHM Electronics system TOTEM Roman Pots FEC-CCS Trigger and Timing RP motherboard RP hybrid with VFATs and detector 220 m 147 m Tracking data Trigger data TTC data Trigger Timing Control Counting room Trigger data To DAQ Finished Feb 2009, units for 147 m under test Agreement with Cicorel on relaunch of production OK short cabling finished HOST board: clear soldering problem production relaunched

Walter Snoeys – CERN – PH – ESE – ME –TOTEM October 2009 Need cabling between motor racks and S1E8 (done) Need electronics box to treat the signals (negotiated simplified scheme with the motor control people) -> just got installed after rearranging of the rack by CMS Get tests done -> to be started Beam Interlock

Walter Snoeys – CERN – PH – ESE – ME –TOTEM October 2009  12 Roman Pots installed, RP MBs received for rest of the pots, need testing  Printed Circuit boards issues HOST board (cfr supra) RP hybrid -> new production launched for 147m after discussion with company CC mezzanine production (delamination) Electronics for electrical repeaters tested, would like to test in tunnel + launch production, cabling for this almost debugged -> needs mechanical adaptation on HOST board Interlock box installed to be tested in situ (pcb already tested separately)  Cabling Lots of progress Local and alcove (maratons) cabling complete Local fibers installed, made support for optical fanouts Optical patch panel in counting room finished Roman Pot Electronics Status

Walter Snoeys – CERN – PH – ESE – ME –TOTEM October 2009 Gas detector hybrids: 370 destroyed in production (delamination) Hybrids delivered to T1 and T2:  To T1: 348 + 21 delaminated, 255 working, need 280 in the experiment  Should look what can be recovered. Should look at ‘incorrect DAC parameters’ (double check limits) !! Issue = tripping effect  To T2: 233 strips 641 pads,  Need 160 and 520 working  Already relaunched 100 pads/100 strips in a small production here at CERN  Strip hybrids should be sufficient to cover immediate T1 need Working with Bice to get reimbursed, and with Cicorel for new production

Walter Snoeys – CERN – PH – ESE – ME –TOTEM October 2009  Need T2 DCS box installed to branch DCS but also DSS  Detector hybrids (see previous slide)  CC mezzanine production difficult (spares)  CCUM ok but need more spares T2 (GEM) Electronics Status

Walter Snoeys – CERN – PH – ESE – ME –TOTEM October 2009 Printed circuit boards

Walter Snoeys – CERN – PH – ESE – ME –TOTEM October 2009  Issues:  Host board production  Hybrids  CC mezzanine  T1 tripping  Lots of progress – large effort on cabling/mounting  Still need link between counting room and cavern  Test of interlock box  Need to cable DSS/DCS and finalize counting room USC55  Discussion with CMS for TTC Conclusions
