1 George Washington AMERICA’S FIRST PRESIDENT

2 English/ Language Arts 2 nd Grade  CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.1 CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.1  Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.  The Purpose of this presentation is to familiarize my class with George Washington.  Learning Objective: The students will be able to know who George Washington is, what he is famous for, when he was president, and why he is so important to our nation’s history.

3 George Washington’s Childhood  He was born February 22, 1732 in Virginia  He once had smallpox, but survived  He was made county surveyor at the age of 17  There is a tale that George Washington chopped down a cherry tree, then immediately told his mother. Thus noting that he could not tell a lie.

6 George Washington in the Army  After his brother died, he moved into his home called Mount Vernon  He was assigned to lead the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War  Washington managed to lead the army to win key victories which caused the British army to eventually surrender in 1781  He also fought in the French and Indian War  Due to his massive success leading the army, he was unanimously voted to be our nation’s first President

9 George Washington’s Presidency  He was president 1789-1797  In both elections, he was unanimously voted by all members of the Electoral College  George Washington formalized Thanksgiving by making it a National Holiday  He died 3 years after leaving office at Mount Vernon at the age of 67
