2 Governor of North Carolina.. The governor of North Carolina in my decade of the 1950’s was William Bradley Umstead. This picture at the bottom is Governor Umstead.

3 Umstead’s Background  Umstead was born in Durham County, North Carolina in 1895.  As a child William Umstead grew up on a farm doing different chores.

10 Inauguration Day..  On inauguration day, January 8, 1953 Umstead was hoarse and seemed to have a cold.  Two days later he was admitted to Watts Hospital in Durham where it was diagnosed that he had a heart attack.

11 A “Better Tomorrow”  Governor Umstead issued a call for a “better tomorrow”.  This was programs endorsing state issues to finance school buildings and improve mental institutions.

14 William Bradley Umstead On November 4, weakened by hearing, he was put in the hospital again. Three days later, he became the first chief executive since Daniel Fowle in 1891 to die in office.

15 The State Park: William B. Umstead park was named after Governor Umstead because of his conservation efforts.

16 The State Park. The state park covers over 5,579 acres of land.

17 The State Park Joined as One. The Crabtree Creek and Reedy Creek State Park was joined as one park after 1966, Under the Umstead name.
