For example, regarding uniforms that require shirts to be tucked in, Grace Chen writes, “Students who are overweight may feel very self-conscious about their bodies.” She also writes that kids of a certain age are naturally more worried about their bodies, “ and wearing a school uniform will not alleviate this concern.” These quotes show that even though uniforms may help some alienated students feel more connected, it will only further isolate students for whom the uniform exposes or exaggerates features that the student already worries about. The quotes also show that all students, not just overweight students, have anxiety about their bodies, and, if students are too worried about their appearance, they won’t be able to focus on their school work.
