5 Effects of the Reformation on Society Education  Humanist methods in Protestant secondary schools and universities – meant for more than just the societal elite  Encouraged the development of public schools for children – provide the church with good Christians Marriage  Family was placed at the center of community life  Clergy could marry  Traditional role for women as part of God’s divine plan

6 Effects of the Reformation on Society Anti-Semitism  Discrimination against Jews continued  Luther hostile to Jews – urged that synagogues be destroyed  Catholic church hostile also – ghettoes were formed in the Papal States

8 Catholic Reformation The Catholic Reformation, or Counter-Reformation, was a revitalization of the Catholic church in the 16 th century. Supported by 3 elements:  1. The founding of the Jesuits  2. Reform of the papacy  3. Council of Trent

9 1. Jesuits Ignatius of Loyola founded the Society of Jesus, or Jesuits.  Members of the Jesuit order vowed obedience to the pope.  The Jesuits used education to spread their message.  They were successful in missionary work.

10 2. Reform of the papacy Pope Paul III appointed a Reform Commission to review Church corruption; the commission condemned actions by former popes.

11 3. Council of Trent Officials held discussions over an 18 year period. The Council created a clear body of doctrine that reaffirmed traditional Catholic teachings.  Faith and good works for salvation  Seven sacraments and view of the Eucharist  Clergy should not marry  Belief and purgatory and indulgence were strengthened although they were no longer sold. It unified the Church under the pope’s supreme leadership.
