1 1.01-1.02 RECAP 1.01-IDENTIFY CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN THE HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM INDUSTRY. 1.02-UNDERSTAND THE COMPLEXITY OF HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM DESTINATIONS. Unit 1: Understand the complexity of hospitality and tourism destinations.

2 1.01 Within the hospitality Industry it is important that you are able to work with people. Housekeeping managers are in charge of the employees who clean the property’s sleeping rooms. Interpersonal skills, communication, empathy, patience, providing great eye contact (non-verbal), problem solving and being polite are some important skills/traits necessary to be successful in the Hospitality & Tourism profession.

3 1.01 Professional Association-a group of people organized to improve themselves, their profession and their industry.  NRA (National Restaurant Association)  AH&LA (American Hotel and Lodging Association)  U.S. Travel Association

4 5 Segments of the Hospitality and Tourism Industry  Food and Beverage- Quick-service restaurants, full service, street vendors, carry out and cafeterias  Lodging- Hotels, motels, inns, bed and breakfasts, hostels, campsites.  Travel - Car rentals, buses, trains, airplanes, cruise ships- TRANSPORTATION  Tourism- (Planning different types of trips) Tour companies, tourism offices, convention and visitors bureaus.  Recreation- consists of providers of activities for rest, relaxation and enjoyment.  Sports fans would be interested in visiting spectator sports, museums, etc…

5 1.02 Interrelationship- the way in which each of two or more things is related to the other or others. Tourist - a person who is traveling, especially for pleasure.  Adventure-sporty, outdoorsy  Culture- museums Voluntourism—tourism that includes volunteering Ecotourism—observing and preserving the natural environment and culture Heritage tourism—traveling to places that authentically represent history and culture

6 1.02 Peak seasons are those with the highest demand Off-peak seasons have the lowest demand Shoulder season-The time between high and low season in a travel market Tourism destination Areas (TDAs) can be constructed or natural. Seasonality-Fluctuations in the number of visitors, expenditures, and transportation needs.  Based on Climate  Florida for warm weather visitors  Colorado for cold weather visitors
