1 3 NOVEMBER 2015 Bell activity – Journal... In your own words define what a hero is. What does it take to be a hero. Who do you know of who is considered a hero? Do you think they fit the description? Why? Would you want to be a hero? Can a person who is trying to be a hero, who wants everyone to see them as a hero, truly be a hero? How is a hero like Brady different than a superhero from the movies or comicverse? Include a story of a heroic act, either one you have heard or a fictional story that fits your definition of a hero. Today we will: learn syllable breaks for spelling unit 20 learn why we use domino reading & how to use it learn what happens in R.K. chapter 7 & 8

2 CLEAR YOUR DESK TO TAKE THE SPELLING PRACTICE TEST FOR UNIT 20. When you finish with the practice test, turn it face own on the corner of your desk and work on one of the following: filling in plot line notes (green sheet) filling in characterization notes (purple sheet) working on Vocabulary list #1 (you will be quizzed on these words on Thursday.

4 It is a far less stressful, and more successful way to read out loud in a class room of people…. One of the most effective ways to increase your reading fluency is to read out loud.

5 How to domino read  Read through the ticket you are given.   Search through the chapter and find the section that matches your ticket.  Read through it again, mouthing the words to make sure you know how to pronounce them.  If you have any questions, raise your hand for assistance.  Mark your excerpt with the ticket (use it as a bookmark). 6 How to domino read o Read along in the book as the class reads o Be ready to transition smoothly into your turn, thus avoiding DEAD AIR. o When you read, try to read with an appropriate tone and voice. While we read: E:\VIDEOS\class videos\RED Kayak

7 FILL IN YOUR NOTES OF CHAPTER 7. REMEMBER PARENTHETICAL CITATIONS. SILENTLY READ THROUGH CHAPTER 8 FILL IN YOUR NOTES ON CHAPTER 8 WHAT DO YOU LEARN ABOUT BRADY’S MOM? WHAT DOES BRADY’S REACTION TEACH YOU ABOUT HIM? HOW DOES HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH THE RIVER CHANGE?

8 SILENTLY READ THROUGH CHAPTER 8 FILL IN YOUR PLOT NOTES. MAKE SURE TO DISCUSS THE FOLLOWING CONCEPTS AS WELL AS ANY OTHERS THAT SEEM SIGNIFICANT. EXPLAIN WHY BRADY’S MOM PULLED HIM FROM SCHOOL. WHY DIDN’T SHE WAIT TILL AFTER SCHOOL? WHAT HAPPENED TO BEN? WHY DOES BRADY BLAME HIMSELF? WHY DOES BRADY GO OUT ON THE RIVER? DESCRIBE HIS REACTION TO THE RIVER. HOW DOES THIS RELATE TO THE LAST SENTENCE IN CHAPTER 1.

9 Remember….. Spelling unit 20 due Wednesday Test over spelling on Wednesday Test over chapters 1-12 on Friday You will be tested over the vocabulary list on your bookmark.
