3 What Influences Parenting? Personal Influences The kind of person you are The experiences you have had Qualities and attitudes within you Personality Traits Patient, outgoing, understanding, compassionate, etc. Parent’s personality = strong impact on children Feelings About Children Do you like them? How should they spend their early years? What are your opinions about what and how they learn? What behavior is appropriate/inappropriate?

4 What Influences Parenting? Parenting Values What’s important to you for good parenting? Is financial security high on your list? How important is spending time with your children? Parenting Goals What kind of parent do you want to be? What kinds of children do you want to raise? Having clear goals keeps parent’s on track for active “parenting”

5 Outside Influences on Parenting Families and Culture Traditions, values, beliefs, etc. Economic Conditions Money is not the key to happiness, but offers security and opportunity for families Being financially ready to support a family is helpful Social Policies Parents have responsibilities defined by the government (welfare of children, domestic relations, violence, child abuse, divorce, adoption, and child care) Changing Gender Roles Sharing responsibilities is a must for today’s family/society Theories Parenting shaped by research studies and proven techniques Well-known theorists in child development (page 62)

6 Ages/Stages of Child Development Infant Birth to 1 year old Toddler One to three years old Preschooler Three to five years old School age Five to puberty (pre-teen) Adolescent Puberty to adulthood (18)

7 Developing a Parenting Style A way in which a parent consistently interacts with their children 3 broad categories Authoritarian Democratic Permissive In 2 groups of 5 and 1 group of 6, draw for a parenting style and make a poster describing it. Present to the class.

8 Identifying Parenting Styles “I know that toy seemed fun at Nikki’s house, but it doesn’t look very sturdy. We’ll go to the store so you can see other toys you’ll like just as much. I think we can agree on something that makes good use of Grandma’s money.” DEMOCRATIC –considered the child’s wishes but made it clear that the final decision would be made with parental input.
