Responsible Research and Innovation Enhancing Responsible Research and Innovation through Curricula in Higher Education (EnRRICH)

Today’s session Introduction to Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) Explore your own work using RRI How could you use RRI to enrich/deepen your work? What can the Science Shop do to support you in building RRI into your work?

In a nutshell:  Solving real-world problems collaboratively  Research and innovation (including applied research) addressing research questions from society  Collaborations between researchers, policymakers, civil society organisations (CSOs), statutory bodies and industry at all stage of the research process What is Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) – in our own words?

‘A transparent, interactive process by which societal actors and innovators become mutually responsive to each other with a view on the (ethical) acceptability, sustainability and societal desirability of the innovation process and its marketable products’ (Von Schomberg 2011) Revised working definition (EC 2015) (recognising there is no consensus) http://ec.europa.eu/research/swafs/pdf/pub_rri/rri_indicators_final_version.pdf

Responsible Research and Innovation is a dynamic, iterative process whereby all stakeholders involved in the Research and Innovation practice become mutually responsive and share responsibility regarding both the outcomes and process requirements. New working definition (RRI Tools 2015) http://www.rri-tools.eu/documents/10182/18424/D1.3_QualityCriteriaGoodPracticeStandards.pdf/f7a1d707-5e54- 48cb-949b-053dc7c6f36f

 Do you have strengths in any of these RRI process requirements that you could build on?  Is there anything about your current processes that this framework could be used to strengthen?  Are any of the RRI process requirements weaker, or even missing from your curriculum? Could it be adapted to include them?  Are there other potential ways of introducing RRI into the curriculum here in QUB (How) Can you/do you use RRI to deepen/enrich your work?

 Encouraging and stimulating debate in the university on this idea  Sharing resources developed in the project  Potential to trial a 1-hour workshop with students on RRI as part of a module  We will be supporting at least one project to explore RRI in depth in a module, as a case study, this academic year – are you interested? How can we support you with building RRI into your work?
