4 Indirect Object Pronouns
Every sentence consists of at least a subject and a verb. Subjects tell who or what is doing an action. A verb gives an action or a state of being.

5 Examples Children play. Work stopped. Work stopped. He is smart.

6 Indirect Objects Indirect object pronouns state to whom or to what the action of the verb is done. They will answer the questions … To whom is being verbed? – or – To what is being verbed?

7 John writes his brother.
Examples John writes his brother. To whom is John writing? His brother

8 Examples John speaks to Paul and Mary. To whom is John speaking?

9 Verb gustar Step 1. Decide which form of the verb
There are only two forms of the verb. Gusta used with singular things or infinitives Gustan used with plural things

In order to show who’s doing the liking, you need to include the following: me te le nos os les These are your indirect object pronouns!

In order to clarify who is doing the liking, you need to include the following: These are your indirect objects. A mí A nosotros A [nombre] y a mí A ti A vosotros A él A ella A usted A [nombre] A ellos A ellas A ustedes A [nombre] y a [nombre]

12 How to write a sentence 1. Conjugate your verb for the subject.
2. Ask yourself “To whom is being verbed?” or “To what is being verbed?” → That’s your indirect object! 3. Choose your indirect object pronoun. 4. Put an indirect object pronoun in front of the verb, but after “no” (if there is a no in the sentence). 5. Make sure your indirect object has an a in front of it.

13 Word order [Subject] + [no] + [IOP] + [verb] + [direct object] + [a] + [indirect object]

14 Sam gives money to Mr. Miga. Subject? Sam Verb? gives Sam da dinero.
Example Sam gives money to Mr. Miga. Subject? Sam Verb? gives Sam da dinero.

15 Sam gives money to Mr. Miga. To whom is Sam giving money? Mr. Miga!
Example Sam gives money to Mr. Miga. To whom is Sam giving money? Mr. Miga! That’s my indirect object!

16 Sam gives money to Mr. Miga. What’s my indirect object pronoun?
Example Sam gives money to Mr. Miga. What’s my indirect object pronoun? Mr. Miga ≈ él → le Sam le da dinero al Sr. Miga.

17 Some tips 1. If you ever see “a …” almost always it’s a hint that you have an indirect object. That “a …” will help you figure out which indirect object pronoun to use. yo → a mí me tú → a ti te a [nombre] y a [nombre] les  2. With indirect object pronouns, the IOP is NEVER the same as the subject of your sentence. Therefore, conjugate your verb first before trying to put in the IOP.
