3 Main Focus: Computer Software Engineering

4 What is it? Design and develop software including-computer games, business applications, operating systems, network control systems, and middleware. Computer Software Engineering can be divided into two categories- Computer Applications Software Engineer- Analyze end users‘ needs and design, construct, deploy, and maintain general computer applications software or special utility programs. Computer Systems Software Engineer- Coordinate the construction, maintenance, and expansion of an organization’s computer systems.

5 Work Environment/Injuries 40 hour work week Work in clean, comfortable offices or in laboratories in which computer equipment is located. Software engineers who work for software vendors and consulting firms frequently travel to meet with customers, or telecommunicate. Injuries are rare, but include eyestrain, back discomfort, and carpal tunnel syndrome.

6 Education/Skills Commonly bachelor’s degree is required for lower paid jobs, although a master’s degree is preferred for higher paid jobs. Recommended study: Computer science, software engineering, or mathematics. Need to have strong problem-solving skills, analytical skills, ingenuity, and creativity. Need to know multiple programming languages (C++, Objective C, Java) Keep up to date on latest technology and software. Have a broad knowledge and experience with a variety of computer systems and technology.
