1 Number The Stars A Choose Your Own Adventure Story
By Isaiah Hastings Based on the book by Lois Lowry

2 You are about to enter the world of Annemarie Johansen, a little girl living in Copenhagen during the German occupation of Denmark in WWII. Unlike other stories, you choose what the Annemarie does. Click below to start your adventure.

3 Chapter 1: Why are you running?
You and your friend Ellen are on your way home from school. You convince Ellen to race you to the corner of the street. She agrees, but you are stopped by German soldiers before you reach the corner. Continue

4 Chapter 1: Why are you running?
The soldiers ask you why you are running. You start to tell them you were practicing for a school race, but stop yourself midsentence as you remember that you have been told not to speak very much to the soldiers. Kirsti, your little sister, waddles sulkily up to you. She is upset because she can’t move as fast as you or Ellen, and got left behind. Continue

5 Chapter 1: Why are you running?
One guard looks at Kirsti and tussles her hair. Kirsti slaps the guard’s hand away and says, “Don’t.” The guards laugh and let you go home. Continue

6 Chapter 2: Who is the man who rides past?
While telling Kirsti a bedtime story, you remember a story Papa told you a long time ago. As King Christian X rode past the street as he does every day, a Nazi asked a teenager who the man was. The teenager told the soldier that it was the king. The soldier asked why the king didn’t have any bodyguards, and the teenager said that all of Denmark was his bodyguard. Continue

7 Chapter 3: Where is Mrs. Hirsch?
Mama asks you to get a new button for Kirsti’s jacket. She gives you some Kroner and tells you to go to Mrs. Hirsch’s button shop. You find the shop closed with German writing and a Swastika on the door. Try the Door Go home

8 Chapter 3: Where is Mrs. Hirsch?
Some German soldiers see you try to open the door and ask why you are pulling on the door of a closed shop. You tell them you need a button for your sister and don’t know where Mrs. Hirsch is. The soldier tells you that the shop will not reopen and to go home. Continue

9 Chapter 3: Where is Mrs. Hirsch?
You get home and tell Mama that the shop was closed and that there was German writing and a Swastika on the door. She goes to talk to Mrs. Rosen. Continue

10 Chapter 3: Where is Mrs. Hirsch?
Mama wakes you up in the middle of the night with a nice surprise. Peter, the man who was engaged to your older sister, Lise, before she died somehow, is here! He gives you two seashells, and he gives Mama and Papa a bottle of beer. You learn that Mrs. Hirsch’s shop was closed because she was Jewish. Peter leaves and you go back to bed. Continue

11 Chapter 4: It will be a long night
While playing dolls with your Jewish friend Ellen, Kirsti and Mama get home with Kirsti’s new shoes. Kirsti’s shoes are made of fish scales because of the lack of leather. Ellen offers to die them black. Kirsti plays with you and reminds you of the fireworks you saw one night. Those fireworks were actually the Danish army blowing up their own Naval fleet. Continue

12 Chapter 4: It will be a long night
Papa comes home and says that Ellen will spend the night. After Kirsti goes to bed, Papa explains why. The Nazis obtained a list of Jews, and the Rosens have gone to a safe place with Peter. Ellen will pretend to be Lise. You go to bed. Continue

13 Chapter 5: Who is the dark haired one?
You wake up in the middle of the night to a loud pounding on the apartment door. You wake up Ellen and hear Nazis entering the apartment. You realize that Ellen’s star of David is still on her neck. Rip star off Hide star on Ellen’s neck

14 Chapter 5: Who is the dark haired one?
The Nazis have you leave your room and see the star of David on Ellen’s neck. They take you, Ellen, and your family to a concentration camp. Continue

15 Chapter 6: After the War The war ends eventually and everyone is freed from the concentration camps. Ellen was treated roughly because she was a Jew and didn’t survive. Kirsti was taken to live with a Nazi who had taken a shine to her. Papa was taken to a different camp than you, and you never saw him again. You and Mama survived the camp and went back to your apartment for the rest of your life. Restart End

16 Chapter 6: After the War The war ends eventually and everyone is freed from the concentration camps. Ellen was treated roughly because she was a Jew and didn’t survive. When you arrived home, you were met with a pleasant surprise. Papa still lives in your apartment! He was not captured throughout the war, and never moved out of the apartment. Restart End

Kirsti was taken to live with a Nazi who had taken a shine to her. The other Jews were taken to a different camp than you, and you never saw them again. You and Mama survived the camp and went back to your apartment for the rest of your life. One good thing did happen, though. Papa was still at the apartment when you got back. Restart End

You rip off the star and enter the living room. The Nazis look at you, Ellen, and Kirsti. They ask why Ellen is the only one with dark hair. Papa asks you to get the baby pictures out of the album. Give soldiers album Rip out pictures

The Nazis seem satisfied until they see the date at the bottom of the page. The birth date for Lise couldn’t possibly match Ellen. Continue

The Nazis are satisfied with the pictures and leave. You have a sense of unease. Continue

25 Chapter 6: Is the weather good for fishing?
Mama and Papa decide that the family should go to Uncle Henrik, a fisherman. Papa speaks in code while talking about Ellen. Uncle Henrik asks to talk to you. Talk normally Speak in code

Soon after you hang up, German soldiers come to your door upon. The phone conversation tipped them off to the fact that you were harboring a Jew. The soldiers take you, your family, and Ellen to a concentration camp. Continue

Soon after Papa calls Henrik, you are on a train to your Uncle’s house. Two German Soldiers board the train. They stop and ask you why you are traveling. You say that you are visiting family. The guard asks if you are visiting for the new year, and because it is September, you reply no. Kirsti, however speaks up. In fear that she will talk about Ellen, you feel the need to stop her from talking. Shush Kirsti Cover Kirsti’s mouth

28 Is the weather good for fishing?
Chapter 6: Is the weather good for fishing?  Kirsti pushes your hand out of the way and gets mad at you. She then tells the Nazis all about Ellen, just as you feared. The Nazis imprison you, your family, and Ellen. At the next stop, the German Soldiers take you to a concentration camp. Continue

29 Chapter 6: Is the weather good for fishing?
Kirsti ignores you and brags to the soldiers about visiting Uncle Henrik and about her new shoes. You soon get off the train and start heading toward Henrik’s house. Continue

30 Chapter 7: The house by the sea
You arrive at Uncle Henrik’s house and Ellen comments on it’s beauty. You show Ellen the ocean, and then head inside, stumbling slightly on the loose step. Later that night, you hear Uncle Henrik and Mama talking like they used to many years ago. Continue

31 Chapter 8: There has been a death.
You, Ellen, Mama, and Kirsti have been cleaning the house all day when Uncle Henrik comes home. He and Mama announce that your Great-aunt Berte has died. This confuses you because you have never heard of a Great-aunt Bertie, and you are convinced she doesn’t exist. Continue

32 Chapter 9: Why are you lying?
You follow Uncle Henrik outside as he is going to milk the cow. You are alone , and you want to ask a question. Why are you Who was Lying? Great-aunt Berte?

33 Chapter 9: Why are you lying?
Without looking up, Uncle Henrik says, “Great-aunt Birte was a wealthy politician in Britain. She helped pay for Jewish Synagogues, and has many Jewish friends. You probably have not heard of her because the Germans have prevented her mail from leaving Britain. Up until now she didn’t affect you so we didn’t mention her.” You are satisfied with this answer and go back inside. Continue

34 Chapter 9: Why are you lying?
Uncle Henrik looks up at you. “You are angry.” he says. You answer by saying that Mama has never lied to you before. Uncle Henrik tells you that there was no Great-aunt Birte, but he refuses to tell you what is inside. He insists that it is safer if you do not know. Continue

35 Chapter 9: Why are you lying?
People start to arrive at your house. Mama explains that they were friends of Great-aunt Birte. Someone calls Ellen outside. Soon after, Peter comes inside with Mr. and Mrs. Rosen right behind. Ellen is in Mr. Rosen’s arms. Continue

People start to arrive at your house. Mama explains that they were friends of Great-aunt Birte. Someone calls Ellen outside. Soon after, Peter comes inside with Mr. and Mrs. Rosen right behind. Ellen is in Mr. Rosen’s arms. Continue

37 Chapter 10: Let us open the casket
Uncle Henrik soon leaves to get the boat ready. A liitle while after he leaves you hear pounding on the door. Mama lets the Nazis in. The Nazis question why so many people are here. Mama says that there has been a death. The Nazis ask you who died. Without hesitation you reply, “My Great-aunt Birte.” The Nazis seem satisfied and leave. Continue

38 Chapter 10: Let us open the casket
Uncle Henrik soon leaves to get the boat ready. A liitle while after he leaves you hear pounding on the door. Mama lets the Nazis in. The Nazis question why so many people are here. Mama says that there has been a death. The Nazis ask you who died. Great-aunt Birte I don’t know

39 Chapter 10: Let us open the casket
The Nazis open the casket and find supplies for a long trip instead of a dead body. They take you, your family, the Rosens, and the assembled Jews to a concentration camp. Continue

40 Chapter 10: Let us open the casket
The Nazis are not convinced because of the shakiness in your voice, and ask to open the casket. Mama says that that would be okay, then informs the Nazis about how Great-aunt Berte died of typhus, and how the docter said that typhus germs could be lingering on the dead body. The Nazis decide that it would be better not to open the casket, and leave. Continue

41 Chapter 10: Let us open the casket
Peter says that it would be a good idea to wait a while to make sure Nazis are not listening, and reads out of the Bible to pass time. When he is finished, Peter decides that it is time to open the casket. Continue

42 Chapter 11: Will we see you again soon, Peter?
Peter opens the casket, but instead of a dead body, there are enough supplies for a long trip. You overhear Peter giving Mr. Rosen something. Soon, Peter leaves and takes some of the Jews with him. The old man stumbles on the loose step. Continue

43 Chapter 12: Where was Mama?
Soon after Peter leaves, Mama takes the Rosens outside. Mr. Rosen trips on the step, and Mrs. Rosen catches him. You realize that the Jews will be taken to Sweden, a free country, by ship. You calculate that Mama should be home by 3:30. You fall asleep. Continue

44 Chapter 12: Where was Mama?
You wake up at 4:00. You are confused. Mama should have been home by 3:30. You go up to your room. You look out the window and see Mama lying on the ground. Go to door Go to Mama

45 Chapter 13: Run! As fast as you can!
You got to the door and call to Mama. She says to call the doctor. You do, and she reveals that she tripped on her way home. The doctor fixes her sprained ankle, and you wait for the news. Continue

46 Chapter 13: Run! As fast as you can!
You go to Mama and she says that she tripped on the way home. She sprained her ankle and needs you to call the doctor. On the way inside, you find a small packet on the ground. When you show Mama, she becomes frantic and says to cover the packet in a basket with a napkin, bread, and cheese, and to take it directly to Uncle Henrik, running as fast as possible. She also says to act like Kirsti if anyone stops you. Continue

47 Chapter 14: On the dark path
On your way to the ship, you start comparing your story to Little Red Riding Hood. As you near the ship, you hear the sound of dogs barking. Hide Run Back Keep Going

You run back to the house and tell Mama about what happened. She seems worried. Continue

49 Chapter 14: On the dark path
You Hide until the Nazis pass. By the time you reach the dock, the boat is gone. When you tell Mama this, she is worried. Continue

50 Chapter 14: A failed attempt
You receive word from Peter that German bloodhounds found the hidden Jews before they could be taken to Sweden, and the Nazis took them to a concentration camp. Uncle Henrik was taken as well. You go back to your apartment and tell Papa the news. Life goes on as usual, and eventually the war ends. Restart End

51 Chapter 15: A failed attempt
You receive word from Peter that German bloodhounds found the hidden Jews before they could be taken to Sweden, and the Nazis took them to a concentration camp. Uncle Henrik was taken as well. You go back to your apartment and tell Papa the news. Life goes on as usual, and eventually the war ends. Restart End

52 Chapter 16: A failed attempt

53 Chapter 15: My dogs smell meat
You run into a pair of German soldiers. They ask what you are doing. Act like Kirsti Act normal

“I am delivering lunch to my Uncle,” you reply. The soldier asks to go through the basket. You say no, and the soldier takes it. He finds the packet, opens it, and examines the contents, a handkerchief. He takes the handkerchief and tells you to home. You tell Mama and she seems worried. Continue

55 Chapter 15: My dogs smell meat
“I am delivering lunch to my foolish uncle. He’s a fisherman,” You reply. The guard says that his dogs smell meat. He takes the bread and cheese and feeds it to his dogs. Acting like Kirsti, you pretend to be upset that the soldier is ruining Uncle Henrik’s lunch. The guard throws the napkin to the ground and asks why the packet was hidden. You say that it was not hidden. The guard asks what is in the packet and you start crying. You say that you do not know. The soldier opens the packet and finds a handkerchief. He tosses it on the ground and leaves. You pick up the packet and handkerchief and go. Continue

56 Chapter 15: My dogs smell meat
You reach the ship and deliver the handkerchief to Uncle Henrik. He is clearly relieved and grateful. He tells you to go home and tell Mama he will be home this evening. Continue

57 Chapter 16: I will tell you just a little
The next day, Uncle Henrik talks to you in the barn. He explains that the Jews were hiding beneath the deck of the ship. The Germans have bloodhounds that can sniff out Jews onboard ships. The handkerchief deadens the dogs sense of smell. All of the Jews made it to Sweden safely. Continue

58 Chapter 17: All this long time
Eventually the war ended. Peter died. It turns out that both he and your older sister, Lise, were part of the resistance. Lise was killed during a resistance meeting where the Germans invaded, about a year before our story began. Peter was captured and Executed before the war ended. You still have Ellen’s star of David necklace, and you wear it every day. Here is where our story will end or begin again. Which will you choose? Restart End
