What is past tense?
Present tense explains what we are doing right now.
Past tense explains something that already happened.

2. Regular Past Tense
When we want to explain what we did in the past we use the ending “ed” on our action verb.
Some examples:
Present Tense: We learn how to read
Past Tense: Last week we learned how to read.
Present Tense: I play the guitar.
Past Tense: Yesterday I played the guitar.

7. Regular Past Tense Not all words use “ed” to make them past tense.
We know we can change a verb into the past tense by adding “ed.”
(play – played, work – worked, kick – kicked)
BUT, If the verb ends with the letter e, only add d to make the sentence past tense.

Some verbs that end in e: move – moved chase – chased bounce – bounced love – loved dance – danced

12. Pronouncing Regular Past Tense Verbs
We pronounce / t / after voiceless sounds:
/ p /, / k /, / s /, / f / and voiceless / th / sound
Examples:
stop = stopped
look = looked
miss = missed
laugh = laughed
wash = washed

13. Pronouncing Regular Past Tense Verbs
• We pronounce / d / after voiced sounds: / b / , / g /, / v /, / z/, / m/, /n /, / l /, / r / ,
voiced / th / sound and all vowels.
