4 Colonialism Definition: – Establishment, exploitation, maintenance, and expansion of colonies by people of one territory in another territory. 2 Distinct Periods of Colonialism: – First wave – came with discovery of the new world – Second wave – came with industrialism

5 Colonialism Why certain areas: – Untouched resources – Poorly developed areas – easy to take and control – Easily influenced by Europeans – Strategic Importance – defend interests

7 Imperialism Definition – A policy of extending a country’s power through diplomacy or use of military force Three main forms of Imperialism 1.Colony – territory governed by foreign power 2.Protectorate – territory has own government but it is controlled by a foreign power 3.Sphere of Influence – territory in which another country claims exclusive political or economic rights

8 Imperialism Why does Imperialism happen? 1.Advances in technology with European nations and the United States 2.Increased sizes of militaries in Europe and United States 3.Empires of Asia and North Africa are weakened and not nearly as powerful
