.. CRB/FEH Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 1. I took Distance Learning because: ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I am interested in anthropology and sociology is closely related to it. It is only offered through Distance Learning so I decided to take it. I love to take courses that are advanced and college credit helped. It offered a great class and an equally great and knowledgeable teacher. I also wanted to explore the opportunity to work with new individuals from other schools. I like history and I wanted to take a class that was challenging. AP World History was only offered as a distance learning course. I am going to college for programming and this was the only programming class available. I needed another math class and this was the only class I could have taken. It allows me to converse with students from other schools and allows us to share some different opinions about the subject. Section C

.. CRB/FEH Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments Section C Students most frequently said they took Distance Learning because: They wanted that particular subject. The subject they wanted was only offered in DL. They needed that course. They were interested in the technology. They wanted a challenge, AP or college credit. They were interested in meeting new students. They wanted to try something different.

.. CRB/FEH Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 2. What did you like about Distance Learning? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ The thing I liked best was the amazing dedication and effort of the teacher, especially the way she enabled everyone to interact and learn at the same time. I like the DL because it gave us a chance to meet kids from the other schools and it helped me overcome my fear of public speaking. The interaction between the teacher and the other schools through the television made it easier to learn if I was having trouble. I loved the teacher and the kids I shared class time with, they were wonderfully intelligent people and helped me to grow as a poet, a student and a person. I like the selection of classes. I also liked the camaraderie established with the host site and all other sites during the specific class. It was different and exciting and much more interesting than a regular classroom. A wonderful teacher and classroom setting. It was a good experience, the interaction with the teacher and other class was smooth and beneficial. Section C

.. CRB/FEH Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments Section C Most frequently noted as liked by DL students: Meeting and interacting with different students, teachers and schools. The interesting and comfortable learning environment. The opportunity to take a class not otherwise offered. The subject or course material. The opportunity to try something different. The teacher or teaching assistant.

.. CRB/FEH Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 3. What didn’t you like about Distance Learning? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ The teacher didn’t always acknowledge us or the other school. He seemed to focus more on his classroom than on the others. I didn't like how at times it felt like the instructor would talk just to his class. Sometimes it was hard to hear people and sometimes the technology wasn't always working. Sometimes the technology of the classroom slowed things down but not often, and we coped with it well. There was a bit of a time difference for my class the other schools so I wasn’t too happy about that. I had to use two periods of my schedule to take this class. The students in my home class being disruptive and the teacher being unable to do anything. Working with another school that was insubordinate and rude to the teacher. Section C

.. CRB/FEH Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section C Student Comments Most frequently noted as disliked by DL students: Not dealing effectively with bell schedule or school calendar differences. The teacher’s lack of organization or ineffective use of the equipment. Technical problems with audio or poor student/microphone positioning. Lack of interaction with or lack of attention from teacher or other students. Disruptive students or lack of discipline.

.. CRB/FEH Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 4. What changes would you suggest for the Distance Learning classes? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Section C I would have the students from each location gather together at one specific location every once in a while. The teacher should travel to other locations to teach more often. Make the TV screens larger to both enhance the experience and make it easier to see documents placed on the Elmo. Make sure the start time works for all the schools. We often have to wait 20-25 minutes for the other school to come on-screen. I would suggest that we work to make class periods match more accurately. Make more interesting interactive group activities, have videos or material we can relate to that’s modern. The teacher should focus more on the other sites, not just the ones in his class, and try more to keep our names straight. I would suggest more control in the other class, their aide let them do whatever…and they never really paid attention.

.. CRB/FEH Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section C Student Comments Most frequently suggested changes: Visits by teachers to remote classes and or combined class field trips. Better discipline, particularly re: loud talking and class disruptions. Teachers should use the equipment more effectively and be better organized. Schedule one-on-one sessions when needed for extra help. Technical improvements and better student/microphone/camera positioning. More balanced attention to classes and better interaction. Deal more effectively with bell schedule and school calendar differences.

.. CRB/FEH Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ How similar it is to a regular class. After awhile you don't even realize the other students are miles away from you. I was surprised that I could learn just as much or much more over the television with a computer than with a teacher in the classroom. The level of the teacher’s knowledge and her unmatchable work drive, it was a great experience and it never felt as if we were hindered by inertia of any kind. The way we were able to interact with the other school and how well all the technology worked. My teacher made it really easy to communicate with him using e-mail and he made it feel like he was a teacher in my own room. How normal it felt, almost like the teacher and students were there in the room even though they were miles away. How advanced the technology was. How it is so different from a regular class, all its devices were useful (Elmo, video, etc.) Student Comments 5. What surprised you about Distance Learning? Section C

.. CRB/FEH Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support That it is unexpectedly easy to become comfortable with the system. The environment is comfortable and enjoyable. It worked so well. Student Comments 66% 12% 22% Most frequently noted as surprising about distance learning: An appreciation for the advanced technology. Interaction with remote teachers and students was easy. Section C

.. CRB/FEH Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments I didn’t feel there were any limitations. Yes, the teacher did make effort(s) to compensate for limitations in the DL system. No, the teacher did not make an effort to compensate for limitations in the DL system. 6. Did you feel the teacher made an effort to compensate for any limitations in the DL system? Host SitesReceive Sites Section C

.. CRB/FEH Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments (If you answered “ No”) Please describe what you wish your teacher could have done. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Come visit our school, even just once, learn our names. I wish the teacher would have given equal attention and not be biased to her own students. At least pretend that we were in the same room as her. He could have acknowledged the other schools more and included them. I wish he had after school help classes. I wish she had given us more one-on-one help where we needed it. I wish he would have shown more feeling, emotion, some expression instead of lecturing. I wish we could have had after school help classes and gotten our grades on time. He could have scheduled a field trip so all of our classes could meet. Section C

.. CRB/FEH Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section C Students most frequently wished that the teacher would: Make a greater effort to include receive site students in discussions, Pay equal attention to them and get to know them. Visit remote sites at least once and offer some extra help. Be more organized and prepared. Receive site students that feel the teacher did not make an effort to compensate

.. CRB/FEH Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments (If you answered “ Yes”) Please describe the efforts the teacher made to compensate. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ She was sure to have books, assignments and instructions sent to each site in advance. He made use of all of the course time and explained everything carefully and completely. She spoke louder when necessary and zoomed in on documents so that we could read them. She made sure to involve the remote sites in the discussions. She gave equal opportunities for all students. If one person was sick she discussed with them a way to get caught up….whether it was seat time or tests. [Our teacher was] willing to take extra time to go over materials. She gave us her home phone number so that we could contact her if we needed. He had students e-mail him work that couldn’t be handed in during class. He knew who we were and he was quick to respond to e-mail. Section C

.. CRB/FEH Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section C Most frequently recognized DL teacher efforts Students that feel the teacher did make an effort to compensate Provided extra help and review sessions. Visited receive sites and got to know the students. Promoted interaction and participation. Made e-mail or phone contact available.
