1 Thursday, January 7, 2016 1. Copy your learning target: I can state kitchen safety practices. 2. Bell Ringer- 1. Grab a purple book. 2. Open to page 552 and look at the “Kitchen Safety Guidelines” Chart. 3. Name one way to prevent fires. 4. Name one way to prevent electric shocks.

2 Kitchen Tools

3 Dry VS. Liquid Measuring Dry measuring cups are meant to be filled right up to the top and then leveled off with a straight edge of some sort. (Usually these are the ones all stuck together) Job: Measuring dry ingredients. Liquid measuring cups generally have a pour spout and are made to be filled to the numbers on the side of the cup (1/4 cup, 1/2 cup, 6 oz, etc.) rather than being filled right up to the top. (Usually these are the plastic or glass measuring cups) Job: Measuring liquid ingredients.

4 Measuring Spoons Job: measuring teaspoons and tablespoons. Tsp=TEASPOON Tbs=TABLESPOON Which is bigger?

5 Pastry Blender Job: Quickly cuts butter or shortening (fat) into dry ingredients (flour).

6 Wire Whisk A whisk is a cooking utensil used in food preparation and its JOB is to blend ingredients together into a smooth substance or to incorporate air into a mixture. This process known as whisking or whipping.

7 Peeler Job: to peel the skin off a fruit or vegetable with an easy push or pull motion. (Video)

8 Rolling Pin Job: Used to flatten any type of dough into a smooth sheet.

9 Can Opener Job: To use its ‘teeth’ to open a can easily and mess free. (Video)

10 Rubber Scrapper Job: The rubber allows the tool to bend according to the bowl or dish to scoop the remaining batter out.

11 Straight Edge Spatula The straight edge spatula has a blade which is flat, flexible, and straight with no curves or grooves. JOB: It is used for smoothing and leveling dry ingredients.

12 Custard Cups Job: Custard Cups make personal size portions of food. In this class, we will use custard cups to melt ingredients and separate ingredients as needed.

13 Cutting Board Job: To provide a hard, washable surface to cut food items on. *helps protect counter tops

14 Mixing Bowl Job: A bowl used for combining and mixing ingredients.

15 Colander A colander is a metal or plastic container with a perforated bottom. Job: for draining and straining foods. (Video)

16 Cheese Grater Job: used to shred large chunks of a food such as cheese or chocolate. (Video)

17 Zip Lock Bags This is not a real kitchen tool but they will be used often and it is good to know where they are kept. Job: Store/contain items of food for later use.

18 Dish Rag Job: Used to clean up messes or dry dishes. **Never use the same rag for both jobs.

19 Cookie Sheet Job: Used for baking/cooking items such as cookies, biscuits potatoes and other food items. (Video)

20 Sifter Job: To separate and thin out the parts of flour. (Video)

21 Pot Holder Job: To be used when getting an item out of the oven or removing an object off the stove. Be sure you know where these are and are able to locate them quickly

22 Paper Towels JOB: To clean up messed or dry dishes or your hands.
