2 Many individuals are changing their diet in an effort to improve their health. One way that is becoming more common is the choice to eat a vegetarian diet.

3 Vegetarianism There are different types of vegetarian diets. -vegan, eats no animal products at all -ovovegetarian, include eggs -ovolactovegetarian eats both eggs and milk products They are not strictly vegetarians as eggs and milk are products derived from animals.

4 Vegetarianism -semivegetarians do not eat red meat but eat fish and white poultry meat -pescovegetarians eat fish but not poultry

5 Vegetarianism Concerns with a vegetarian diet Vegetarian diets can be healthful, but it is necessary for them to be well planned. If they are not, nutritional deficiencies can result of a lack of calories, vitamins and minerals, and protein.

6 Vegetarianism Calories - Reduced number of calories is not one of the greater concerns unless the person is a child. Children need plenty of calories for growth and development. It is necessary to pay close attention to the amount of calories necessary.

7 Vegetarianism Vitamins - Strict vegetarians may develop a Vitamin B12 deficiency as B12 is found in many animal products. This can be consumed in fortified products or the person can take a supplement.

8 Vegetarianism Vitamins - Vitamin D is another nutrient that is not found in plant foods. If not exposed to enough sun a deficiency may develop and a supplement may be necessary.

11 Minerals - Mineral deficiencies of iron, calcium and zinc may develop. During digestion, some plant foods form compounds known as phytates and oxalates. These compounds can bind these minerals so they cannot be absorbed into the body.

12 Vegetarianism Paying attention to dietary practices can help. For example - eating foods rich in Vitamin C at the same time as foods rich in iron will increase the absorption of iron.
