3 During the 1960s gains achieved by the Civil Rights movement spread to women -Led to the emergence of the Women’s Liberation (Feminist) Movement -wanted social and economic equality -objected to the traditional roles of women -wanted equal access to careers and equal pay to men

4 Women’s movement is led by Betty Friedan who wrote Feminine Mystique (1963) -She challenged the stereotype of middle-class suburban housewives and wanted them to compete for the same jobs as men -She formed the National Organization of Women (NOW), which became the lead voice for the women’s movement

5 Achievements of the Women’s Liberation Movement -more women into college attending and working -Equal Pay Act-required equal pay for men and women doing the same job

6 Title IX (1972)--promoted gender equality in high school and college education, greatly expanded the numbers and opportunities for women -End of Sexist language (Ms. Replaces Mrs./Miss) -Roe v Wade (1973)-- Supreme Court outlaws state regulation of abortion, women have the right to privacy and the right to choose.
