What About The Indwelling Spirit? 1 Cor. 3:16, “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?” 1 Cor. 6:19, “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?” 2 Tim. 1:13-14, “Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Spirit which dwelleth in us.” WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? LITERAL OR FIGURATIVE?
3
Father (1 John 4:16) “God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.” Son (Eph. 3:17) “…Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love..” Spirit (1 Cor. 3:16) “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?” What About The Indwelling Spirit? God’s indwells or lives within the Christian in a figurative sense of RELATIONSHIP (1 Cor. 6:14-20).
4
GODLY VS SINFUL RELATIONSHIP! (1 Cor. 6:14-20) “Your bodies are members of Christ” (v. 15). “Joined unto the Lord is one spirit” (v. 17) “Temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, ye are not your own” (v. 19). (2 Sam. 8:13, 27,30) “Ye are bought with a price...” (v. 20). “Members of a harlot” (v. 15) “One body” “One flesh” (v. 16) What About The Indwelling Spirit?

Apostles Promised Miraculous Powers, Not Christians Today Apostles were baptized with Holy Spirit –John 14:26, “…shall teach you all things…” –John 15:26, “…he shall testify of me…” –John 16:13, “…when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth.” –Acts 1:5,8, “…ye shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days hence. …But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me … unto the uttermost part of the earth.” Luke 24:49; Acts 2:4
6
Miraculous Gifts, Special Purposes Gave Confirmation, Heb. 2:4, “God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?” Gave Inspiration, Acts 2:4, “…they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” Provided Edification, 1 st Cor. 14:26, “How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.”
7
Miraculous Gifts, Limited Time Revelation of God’s word is now complete –“1 st Cor. 13:8-10, “Love never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.” –James 1:25, “…whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.”

WHAT WOULD A LITERAL INDWELLING ACCOMPLISH? SPIRIT John 3:5, 8 John 6:63 Titus 3:5 John 16:8 Rom. 8:16 Rom. 15:13 II Thess. 2:13 I Cor. 6:11 Acts 9:31 Eph. 5:18-19 John 16:8 ACTION Gives Birth Gives Life Saves Convicts Testifies Gives Power Sanctifies Washes Comforts Indwells Reproves WORD I Peter 1:23-25 Ps. 119:93 Jam. 1:21 Titus 1:9 John 5:39 Heb. 4:12 John 17:17 Eph. 5:26 Rom. 15:4 Col. 3:16 II Tim. 3:16 What is said of the SPIRIT is also said of the WORD. Because the Spirit REVEALED the word (John 16:13) and works THROUGH the word (Eph. 6:17)!

What about Acts 2:38? Acts 2:37-38, “Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” –Does this prove that the Holy Spirit directly dwells within Christians today? –KEY---What is the “gift of the Holy Spirit”?
10
The “Gift” Is The Down Payment Acts 2:39,41, (cont.),“For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call…Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.” Eph. 1:13-14, “…ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our in- heritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.”
11
Same Gift Given by God the Father and God the Son John 4:10,14, “If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water… whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” Rom. 6:23, “…the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Eph. 2:8-9, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

What is the Indwelling of the Holy Spirit? The Indwelling of the Holy Spirit is: A Figure of Speech that expresses a RELATIONSHIP with God! Identifies the Promise Of Salvation through the Gospel! A Gift that lives within us WHEN we walk in the Word the Spirit revealed! Will you receive the Promise today (Acts 2:38)?
