1 The Holy Spirit Part 1 Introduction Part 2 Inspiration
Part 3 Baptism of Holy Spirit Part 4 Gifts of the Holy Spirit Part 5 Indwelling of the Holy Spirit Part 6 Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit

2 Four Measures of the Holy Spirit
Spirit with Measure = Christ Jn. 3:34-35 Baptism of Holy Spirit = Apostles Acts 2 Gifts of the Holy Spirit = 1 Cor. 12 Ordinary - Indwelling of Holy Spirit Acts 2:38

3 The Holy Spirit Rom. 8:9-11 “But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. 10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.”

4 How ? The Holy Spirit (1) Personally (2) Indirectly Rom. 8:9-11
Dwell in you Dwell = to occupy a house, reside, to inhabit God Christ Holy Spirit 1. Definition a. Dwell = to occupy a house, i.e. reside (figuratively, inhabit, remain); by implication, to cohabit: , to inhabit, dwell in b. This word indicates one lives or abides in the place specified. c. In these 3 verses it tells us that God dwells in us, Christ dwells in us and the Holy Spirit dwells in us. 2. But the fact of the indwelling spirit does not tell us the method, or how the Holy Spirit dwells in us. (CLICK) There are two ways in which the Holy Spirit could indwell Christians: a. Personally - he could dwell in us personally, apart from or in addition to any other means. This would be a literal, personal, actual indwelling. b. Indirectly - by means of - an indirect indwelling. So does the H.S. dwell in the Christian? Yes! 3. The real question is the method or how the Holy Spirit dwells in us! (1) Personally (2) Indirectly How ?

5 Holy Spirit Dwells in Christians
1. Holy Spirit Dwells in Christians “Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Acts 2:38 2 commands = repent and be baptized 2 promises = remission of sins and gift of Holy Spirit Acts 3:19 “Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord” I. THE FACT THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT DWELLS IN CHRISTIAN A. Acts 2:38 “Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” 1. This verse contains 2 commands and 2 promises a. Commands = repent and be baptized b. Promises = remission of sins & Gift of Holy Spirit 2. Both promises are given to those who obey both commands 3. You cannot separate the promises and say only 1 applies any more than you can separate the commands. (CLICK) B. Acts 3:19 is parallel to Acts 2:38 “Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord” 1. This verse also contains 2 commands and 2 promises a. Commands = Repent and be converted - parallel to Acts 2:38 Repent and be baptized b. Promises = Blotting out of sins & Times of Refreshing Remission of sins & gift of Holy Spirit 2. All who repent and are converted receive the blotting out of sins and the times of refreshing. 3. Just as those who repented and were baptized received remission of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit. 4. The Gift of the Holy Spirit would be the same thing as the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

6 Method of Holy Spirit Indwelling
2. Method of Holy Spirit Indwelling God Dwells in us - 2 Cor. 6:16 “I will dwell in them” - 1 John 4:12-13 “God abides in him” Christ Dwells in us - Eph. 3:16-17 “Christ dwell in your hearts” - Gal. 2:20 “Christ lives in me” II. THE METHOD OF HOLY SPIRIT INDWELLING A. The Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit dwells in Christians by means of the truth, the spirit filled word of God. B. God Dwells in Us 1. 2 Cor. 6:16 “And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will dwell in them And walk among them. I will be their God, And they shall be My people.” 2. 1 John 4:12-15 “No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us. 13 By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. C. Christ dwells in us 1. Eph. 3:16-17 “that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith” 2. Gal. 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.” BUT HOW?

7 Method of Holy Spirit Indwelling
2. Method of Holy Spirit Indwelling “Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son.” 2 John 9 God and Christ do not dwell in us personally - God is in heaven - Christ has ascended back to right hand of God How do God and Christ dwell in us? 1. 2 John 9 - abide in the teaching “Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son.” 2. Neither God nor Christ dwell in us personally. a. God is in heaven b. Christ has ascended back to right hand of God

8 Method of Holy Spirit Indwelling
2. Method of Holy Spirit Indwelling When the Holy Spirit dwells in Christians, then God and Christ dwell in them. “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.” Cor. 3:16-17 When the Holy Spirit dwells in Christians, then God and Christ dwell in them a. 1 Cor. 3:16-17 “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17 If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.” 2. God is in Heaven and Christ has ascended back to be at the right hand of God. 3. Just as God and Christ dwells in us, so the Holy Spirit dwells in us. 4. Note this Illustration to show the point: a. We often hear the statement that “I Can see his Father in Him”. What is ordinarily meant here is that one is able to see the influence of his Father because of similar actions or attitudes. b. What is not meant is that his Father is personally seen by the on looker. c. Thus the only conclusion that one must draw from such study, is the fact that the word “DWELL” DOES NOT NECESSITATE A LITERAL INDWELLING OF THE PERSON. 7. We do not have any problem when the Bible says the Father is in us. No one thinks that there is a little bit of deity literally abiding in our bodies. We understand that He is in us as His will dominates our lives. 8. When the Bible says that Christ is in us we do not think that Christ is no longer in heaven, but has come back to the earth and divided Himself up into as many portions as He has followers, and that He literally injects a portion of Himself into each. We all understand that when it says Christ is in us that it means that He is in us as His teaching molds and influences and directs our lives. 9. That is what the Bible teaches about how the Holy Spirit dwells in us.

9 Method of Holy Spirit Indwelling
2. Method of Holy Spirit Indwelling Eph.5:19 “But be filled with the spirit: speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord” Col. 3:16 “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord” Verses 1. The rich indwelling of the Word is the same as being filled with the spirit. 2. The Holy Spirit operates on our hearts through the word, it operates in no other way. 3. There is no direct operation of the Holy Spirit on anybody, whether saint or sinner!!! He dwells in us indirectly!! 4. Examples of conversion prove that the Holy Spirit did not operate directly upon the hearts of the sinner.

10 Method of Holy Spirit Indwelling
2. Method of Holy Spirit Indwelling Conversions Acts 2 - Pentecost = v. 37 they heard the word - Peter Acts 8 - Eunuch - Spirit operated on the Eunuch - Through the Truth - Preached by Philip v. 35 “preached Jesus” The Holy Spirit always worked through the preaching of the Word to men by men. 1. Acts 2 - Pentecost = they heard the word - v.37 as preached by Peter. 2. Acts 8 – Ethiopian Eunuch a. The spirit operated on the Eunuch through the truth preached by Philip b. It did not operate directly on the sinner. c. Philip preached uto him Jesus - Acts 8:35 “Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him.” 3. There is not one example of conversion in which the sinner was directly touched by the Holy Spirit to teach him. The Holy Spirit always worked through the preaching of the word to men by men 4. The Holy Spirit dwells in the heart of a Christian in exactly the same way he converts a sinner, through the truth - the word of God! H. It is not necessary today for the Holy Spirit to do anything directly in order for the sinner to be saved. What the Holy Spirit does for the sinner today is done through the N.T., and it is the blood of Christ which saves and not the Holy Spirit.

11 Method of Holy Spirit Indwelling
2. Method of Holy Spirit Indwelling Conversions If the Holy Spirit worked independent of the Word, then there would be no need: - to have the Bible - Have missionaries go and preach the gospel 1. If the Holy Spirit worked independent and separate from the word, then there would be no need: To have the Bible or to have missionaries go and preach the gospel, because the Holy Spirit would reveal the message.

12 Method of Holy Spirit Indwelling
2. Method of Holy Spirit Indwelling If the Holy Spirit indwells a Christian today and gives him strength directly and apart from revelation then: Either…. (1) The doctrine of Impossibility of Apostasy is correct. (2) Or if the Christian sins the Holy Spirit has failed a. If the Holy Spirit indwells a Christian today and gives him strength directly and apart from revelation (Word of God) then: 1. The doctrine of Impossibility of Apostasy is correct. Because if the Holy Spirit takes over and empowers the Christian to overcome sin, how can the Christian fall? 2. Or if the Holy Spirit directly and apart from the word empowers the Christian to overcome sin, and the Christian is overcome by sin, then the Holy Spirit has failed the Christian.

13 Method of Holy Spirit Indwelling
2. Method of Holy Spirit Indwelling A literal indwelling would mean INCARNATION: Christ was Deity in the flesh - that is “Incarnation” or Deity dwelling in a human body. If the 3rd person of the Godhead - the Holy Spirit - dwells in us literally then He would be occupying a human body and that would be Incarnation. K. A literal indwelling would mean INCARNATION: 1. Christ was deity in the flesh - that is “Incarnation” or deity dwelling in a human body. 2. If the third person of the Godhead - the Holy Spirit - dwells in us literally, then He would be occupying a human body and that would be Incarnation. 3. That is not possible!!!

14 Holy Spirit and Word are Identical in Action
3. Holy Spirit and Word are Identical in Action Holy Spirit Action Word of God Gen. 1:2 2 Cor. 3:6 Jn. 3:8 Tit. 3:5 1 Cor. 6:11 Rom. 8:11 Creation Gives Life Born of Salvation Sanctification Dwells in 2 Pet. 3:5 Jas. 1:18 1 Pet. 1:22-25 Jas. 1:21 Jn. 17:17 Col. 3:16 III. THE HOLY SPIRIT AND THE WORD ARE IDENTICAL IN ACTION A. Chart B. All actions of the Holy Spirit upon the human mind is through the Word of God. Every act or influence affirmed of the Holy Spirit is also affirmed of the Word of God. C. The Spirit operated through the word of God in the creation of the world, in the conversion of sinners, and in the indwelling of a Christian. D. This is not to say there is a double process, nor the same thing done twice. But the Word of God and the Spirit work together doing and accomplishing the same thing! They cannot be separated.

15 Is memorizing Scripture The same as the Indwelling?
3. Holy Spirit and Word are Identical in Action Is memorizing Scripture The same as the Indwelling? “For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.” Heb. 4:2 1. Possible Objection: “Would not the indwelling of the Spirit via the in filling of the word demand that anyone who memorizes scripture is regarded as having received the indwelling Holy Spirit?” a. No!!! b. Satan quoted Scripture. We know the H.S> does not dwell in him c. Heb. 4:2 - the word must be mixed with faith to benefit “For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.”

16 How do we know the Holy Spirit
3. Holy Spirit and Word are Identical in Action How do we know the Holy Spirit dwells in us ? “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.” Gal. 5:22-23 “How they told you that there would be mockers in the last time who would walk according to their own ungodly lusts. These are sensual persons, who cause divisions, not having the Spirit.” Jude 2. How do we know if the Holy Spirit dwells in us? a. The same way I know that I have Life - there are signs. b. By our actions we indicate if the Spirit dwells in us - Gal.5:22-23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.” c. If we do not have any of the signs of spiritual life, then we can not say the Spirit dwells in us. d. If we live an ungodly life then the H.S. does not dwell in us - Jude “how they told you that there would be mockers in the last time who would walk according to their own ungodly lusts. These are sensual persons, who cause divisions, not having the Spirit.” 3. The Holy Spirit dwells in us as we allow the work of the Holy Spirit - the truth in God's Word - to dwell in our life and influence us!!!
