3 Columbus Day is on October 12, but it is sometimes celebrated on the second Monday in October. It is a federal holiday, so post offices and federal government offices are closed. Schools in some districts are open while in other districts they are closed. Columbus Day celebrates the 1492 landing of Christopher Columbus on San Salvador Island in the Bahamas. The Bahamas are part of the Americas.

4 Who was Christopher Columbus? He was an Italian explorer who sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492. Columbus"discovered America" when he landed on San Salvador Island in the Bahamas.

5 What was Columbus looking for? He was looking for a sea route to Asia. European merchants traveled across the land to get silk, spices, and opiates from China and India.

6 What did Columbus call the inhabitants of North America? He thought he was in India, so he called them Indians. The arrival of Columbus and the European colonization that followed led to a genocide of the native population.

8 Thanksgiving Day is the fourth Thursday in November. It is a federal holiday, so schools, banks, post offices, and government offices are closed. Thanksgiving was the first holiday celebrated in America. It was first celebrated in the autumn of 1621 when the Wampanoag Indians and the pilgrims got together for a three-day feast and festival of fun. Today, families celebrate Thanksgiving by eating turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, yams, corn, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and an NFL football game are special Thanksgiving Day events. In 2014, Thanksgiving will be on Thursday, November 27.

12 October 31 is Halloween. On Halloween, children wear costumes and go trick-or-treating. They knock on doors and say "Trick or treat." The person who opens the door gives the children candy. The children say "Thank you." Adults like Halloween, too. They like to wear costumes to work and attend parties. Orange and black are popular Halloween colors. Orange is the color of pumpkins and black is the color of darkness. Halloween is a fun holiday, but it is not a federal holiday
