2. The Louisiana Purchase The purchase of a large portion of the Great Plains by America from France. The leaders who made the deal were, Napoleon Bonaparte of France and Thomas Jefferson of America.

3. Louisiana Purchase The Louisiana Purchase was made official on April 30, 1803. The deal was 15 million dollars. The America’s have now been expanded and France got the money it needed for it’s up coming war.

4. Lewis and Clark Lewis and Clark were explorers who were very eager to explore and map the newly purchased region of Louisiana. They were hired by Thomas Jefferson to explore Louisiana. They were asked to keep a journal on all the discoveries they made. They left on May 14, 1804.

5. Lewis and Clark Lewis and Clark had never seen the Great American West so when they met up with the Rocky Mountains they were stunned. To cross the Rockies they acquired Indian guide by the name of Sacagawea who would lead them through.

6. Zebulon Pike Zebulon Pike was an American army general. He led the Pike Expedition which was meant to map the southern part of the Louisiana Territory. Zebulon is the person who discovered Pike’s Peak in Colorado.

7. Zebulon Pike On the Pike Expedition Zebulon was asked to discover the head waters of the Red River. Later in the expedition the party got lost and were captured by the Spanish, they were released in 1807.

8. John C. Fremont John C. Fremont was also a military officer and also involved in the anti-slavery Republican Party. He was asked to map the Arkansas River and to find it’s source. He led three different expeditions before he retired to an easier political life.

9. John C. Fremont The main purpose of the Fremont expeditions were to survey the Western territory of the Louisiana Territory. Mainly the lands between the Mississippi and Missouri River. His full name is John Charles Fremont. He died on July 13, 1890 at the age of 77.

10. Manifest Destiny The belief that American settlers would be settled all throughout the continent. Manifest Destiny was used in 1840 to justify the war with Mexico and to split the state of Oregon in half with Great Britain.
